Out of a war which caused over 50,000,000 deaths comes the story of a dedicated life. Meet Francis Charles DiPietro, a young man from Cambridge, Massachusetts who is called from his education at Harvard University to serve his country in the most decisive hour of World War II. Like his father before him, who was a veteran of the Great War, Frank finds himself balancing his new regime with his loyal desire to maintain regular communications with his family. The letters in this book are a heretofore unpublished piece of American history, filled with valuable details concerning the day-to-day life of a front line infantry soldier. Having proven himself a sharpshooter in basic training, once in ...

Machiavellian melancholy, Burroughsian bohemia, Kafkaesque Kerouac, and a wild, unyielding humor abound! “From grammar school I’ve been able to draw or write things that made people laugh,” says the author, “and that has progressed into a kind of free-spirited entertainment.” Indeed, this is less a “Best of” collection as it is an editorial challenge, for the ten unique novels drawn upon and highlighted are themselves keys which urge further exploration of this fringe author’s striking works. “In all honesty, I love your manuscript and think it’s creative and hilarious…” —Caroline Lyddy Adult Trade Editorial Department, Houghton Mifflin

Prudholm Bay--a sleepy seaside community with a bad attitude. It may be the salty air, it may be the industrial plants, but Prudholm has nurtured quite an odd batch of townsfolk. When Ariel, the local party girl, is found floating in the waters near Prudholm's Nine Points lighthouse, it seemed like her story was over. With diligence and fervor, however, someone has been digging up her corpse and copulating with it. And the audacity of the necrophilia escalates while a relatively fruitless search ensues for her killer/defiler. Seeing his chance to capitalize on his town's misfortune, Anslo Creevington, the local millionaire, constructs a theme park dedicated to (and depicting) Ariel's various unearthings. Morals and scruples fly to the wind as the once-quiet Prudholm Bay plunges into a mudpile of argument and exploitation. From the book: "Was our action really so monstrous in a world where sirens have replaced birds in the night? A world where wars are conducted to sharpen the act of conducting..." Only one man can save Prudholm from its vapid course, and he's one of the prime suspects.

Robert Ervin Howard, author of hundreds of stories and poems, spent his days in what he perceived to be literary obscurity. He took his life on June 11, 1936 with little inkling that his works would establish a vibrant new genre and become equal to the likes of JRR Tolkien. Now you are invited to share in this bold and perceptive retelling of a life made more remarkable by its brilliant spell of self-imposed brevity. The Supreme Moment presents compelling new theories and is packed with over 70 relevant period photos, including such gems as the 1927 Pageant of Pulchritude which Howard attended in Galveston (and what seems to be Howard himself in the background), as well as stories and images from Howard's haunt of Brownwood, TX in the 1930s. Author of over 20 books, DiPietro's earlier Howard credentials include 1995's "The Orange Phoenix," a parody to the REH Conan tale "The Hour of the Dragon," and its sequel "The Death Scrolls," both available today in one volume as "The Phoenix & The Scrolls."

Newcomers as well as followers of the progressive rock band Rush will appreciate this fond and humorous parody of the times and travels of their famous drummer and lyricist Neil Peart. Once a great and intrepid chronicler of his world travels, drummer Francis DiPietro is reduced to cramming his new book into the week his lovely young wife (half his age) goes on vacation to pamper herself at his expense. Uprooted from his Canadian home in order to follow his wife's wishes, our drummer yearns to recapture the creative voice and vision which was his second nature in years past. As he attempts to make the round-trip driving journey from the coast of California to a national park in Texas within his meager seven-day time allotment, DiPietro strives to reconcile his promising past with his uncertain future and dispel the fears which gnaw at his brain. Aging, rueful of his diminishing prowess, he strikes up a bold friendship with a bizarre drifter whose lifestyle holds the key to a freedom he has lost.

One man carries the weight of Generation X. Kyle Waterman, a mild-mannered insurance agent from Denver, quits his job and leaves his family to hop the first Greyhound to anywhere. He thought he was escaping, but with the help of a drug-laden Indian named Emerson Redcreek and a macho, arrogant wreck named Bill Capresci, Kyle finds himself transported to the world of Portobello: a Naked Lunch-type universe where gophers talk, drugs are king, and Kyle is the leader of a growing anti-establishment cult called Silverdew Gincane. With members joining at every stop, Kyle’s cult quickly becomes one of the greatest enemies of the U.S. government. He relocates his people to Paraguay--only to have an army and the ghosts of his past follow and destroy him. “A seminal tour de force. DiPietro is on the cutting edge of dangerous fiction with Portobello Road.”
