Francis M. O'Brien Papers
O'Brien's business correspondence, including appraisals. Within the folders are letters, clippings, catalogs, invoices, notes, original appraisal lists, and other items. Prominent names include Henry Beston, Sterling T. Dow, John Pullen, Frank Siebert, Vladimir Sokoloff, Ruth Moore, and many others. There are also many items of a more personal nature, including magazine and newspaper articles reflecting O'Brien's interest in many subjects such as censorship and Irish subjects. This series also contains personal correspondence between Francis O'Brien and James Vickery, another antiquarian book dealer.

Almost all of the documents in this collection are from organizations that were of interest to Francis OBrien; for example, there are invitations from various art museums. Francis M. O'Brien Letter and Drafts to Mrs. Neal Creamer Regarding Alexander Johnston, Jr., Diaries
TLS from O'Brien to Mrs. Neal Creamer, along with several ms. drafts. The letter regards the Alexander Johnston (1814?-1890) diaries, which Creamer donated to the Wiscasset Public Library in Wiscasset, Me. Includes a biography of Johnston, and information about the diaries, and appraisal value. Johnston wrote sixteen diaries from 1875 to 1890 with entries regarding weather, temperature, garden labors, winter struggles to protect vegetables from frost in cold cellars, navigation on the river, travels around the countryside, local, state, and national politics, food preparation, and some personal notes about himself and his wife. Johnston was born in Wiscasset, graduated from Bowdoin College in 1835 and was a shipbuilder.

Memories of Francis M. O'Brien
Typescript of a talk given by Earle G. Shettleworth Jr. at the Osher Map Library, Univ. of Southern Maine, Portland, Nov. 12, 1999. Also includes photocopies of newspaper articles (obituaries and editorials), and Maine Antiquarian Booksellers Association publication "Book Fair." Francis M. O'Brien, a Portland antiquarian book dealer, died in May 1994.
