Corsica and the Basque Country

Are violent national movements in a democratic Western Europe possible? The conflicts on Corsica and in the Basque country are evidence that they are. The book unveils the background and development of both conflicts within the structured framework of a comparative analysis. It presents the conflicts separately, giving a general overview of their backgrounds and developments. The two conflicts are compared by pointing out their similarities and differences. The diverging outcomes of the conflicts in the year 2000 are explained. Finally, the results of the comparison are applied to a theory of ethnic terrorism. The author: Wolfgang Büttner is a student in history, political science and economics at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. His special field of interest concerns ethnicity and ethnic conflict. In spring 2000, he was a fellow at the Department for Peace and Conflict Studies, Uppsala University, Sweden.

Nested Identities

This groundbreaking work explores the vital importance of territory and space to any genuine understanding of nationalism and identity. Too often, the contributors argue, national identity is analyzed apart from the lands that are integral to its formation, as territory is seen as a commodity to be brokered rather than as central to a group's self-definition. This volume combines theoretical insights with structured case studies on how national identity manifests itself in space and at different geographical scales.

Argentina's Lost Patrol

"An excellent analysis of Argentine guerrilla movements in the 1960s-70s based on a wide range of printed sources and extensive interviews with members of the groups. Rather than describing all the activities of the various groups, this study attempts toexplain the rationale for their behavior"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.

Resisting Terror

Civil resistance campaigns have led to some of the most important international developments in recent years, yet little is known of the role that civilian actors can play in challenging the use of violence by militant groups. This book examines the role that social mobilization in the Spanish region of Basque Country played in the decline and end of the Basque armed separatist group Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA). For more than four decades, ETA waged a bloody campaign against the military and the Spanish and Basque police forces while causing a large number of civilian deaths. The Basque case demonstrates that civil resistance can work against terrorism, and this book will show that social mo...

International Symposium on Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence

The International Symposium on Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence 2011 (DCAI 2011) is a stimulating and productive forum where the scientific community can work towards future cooperation on Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence areas. This conference is the forum in which to present application of innovative techniques to complex problems. Artificial intelligence is changing our society. Its application in distributed environments, such as internet, electronic commerce, environment monitoring, mobile communications, wireless devices, distributed computing, to cite some, is continuously increasing, becoming an element of high added value with social and economic po...

Conventional thermal power generating plants reject a large amount of energy every year. If this rejected heat were to be used through district heating networks, given prior energy valorisation, there would be a noticeable decrease in the amount of fossil fuels imported for heating. As a consequence, benefits would be experienced in the form of an increase in energy efficiency, an improvement in energy security, and a minimisation of emitted greenhouse gases. Given that heat demand is not expected to decrease significantly in the medium term, district heating networks show the greatest potential for the development of cogeneration. Due to their cost competitiveness, flexibility in terms of t...

The Geology of Iberia: A Geodynamic Approach

Pursuing an innovative, global approach, this unique book provides an updated review of the geology of Iberia and its continental margins from a geodynamic perspective. Owing to its location close to successive plate margins, Iberia has played a pivotal role in the geodynamic evolution of the Gondwanan, Rheic, Pangea, Tethys and Eurasian plates over the last 600 Ma of Earth’s history. The geological record starts with the amalgamation of Gondwana in the Neoproterozoic, which was succeeded by the rifting and spreading of the Rheic ocean; its demise, which led to the amalgamation of Pangea in the late Paleozoic; the rifting and spreading of several arms of the Neotethys ocean in the Mesozoic...
