Desde suas origens, predomina no campo de estudos da comunicação uma abordagem dominada por enfoques metodológicos de extração positivista. Neste livro, apresenta-se e se ilustra outra maneira de pensar e trabalhar a matéria. Argui-se em favor de seu estudo a partir de ponto de vista crítico e dialético. Primeiramente, relata-se pois as principais concepções da pesquisa social em circulação desde a II metade do século 20.
