China and Europe Since 1978

Considering the development of Chinese-European relations since China embarked on its open policy, these papers suggest that political relations have not significantly modified Europe's relations with China. They imply that Europe and China tend to view their relations with each other in terms of their relationships with the U.S. Articles include: Human Rights, Europe and the People's Republic of China; Diplomatic Relations and Mutual Strategic Perceptions: China and the European Union; Economic Relations between Taiwan and Europe; and Cultural Relations between China and the Member States of the European Union.

Managing Security in Europe

Managing Security in Europe

In ten to fifteen years, the European Union could include as many as 25 to 30 member states. In view of such an enlarged Union, a definition of the essential interests regarding foreign and security policy is required, as well as a reform of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). Otherwise, the European Union will be unable to effectively tackle the increasing regional and global problems, and as a result of the Union's irresolution, the security of its member states may be impaired. Taking into account the enlargement of the EU with the inclusion of Finland, Austria, and Sweden, the contributors to this book examine the changes taking place in central and eastern Europe, the increasing importance of a broader definition of security, as well as various scenarios for the structure of Europe's security and defense policies. Proposals for future reform of the CFSP are also developed.

The volume provides analyses and evaluations of the continuing importance of Europe’s autonomy in its access to space as a key driver in the development of European space capabilities. From a detailed historical analysis of some of the pitfalls of dependence in the space industry, experts analyse the full range of current European space capabilities and identify areas where autonomy is both possible and required, even in a situation of severe budgetary constraints. The contributions present a comprehensive overview of European efforts in a broad range of areas including energy, culture, science, and security; access to space, space applications, human spaceflight, security and space situational awareness, and strategic issues. They make a cogent strategic and economic case for policy makers to continue to bear in mind the importance of autonomous space capabilities, even in an interdependent globalised world.

Although the United States is considered the world's only superpower, other major powers seek to strengthen the roles they play on the global stage. Because of the Iraq War and its repercussions, many countries have placed an increased emphasis on multilateralism. This new desire for a multipolar world, however, may obscure the obvious question of what objectives other powerful countries seek. Few scholars and policymakers have addressed the role of the other major powers in a post-9/11 world. Global Powers in the 21st Century fills this gap, offering in-depth analyses of China, Japan, Russia, India, and the European Union in this new global context. Prominent analysts, including Zbigniew Br...

This book is an excellent introduction to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Julian Lindley-French clearly outlines all of the institution's key facets to deliver an authoritative account. Detailing the origins, institutions, workings and activities of NATO, this volume also focuses on its future as the institutional basis for the security dimension of the transatlantic relationship, and an institution contributing to global security. It is clear that NATO faces fresh challenges in the twenty-first century and will be in the spotlight for years to come.

China's Economic Statecraft: Co-optation, Cooperation And Coercion

This book aims to study China's economic statecraft in the contemporary era in a comprehensive manner. It attempts to explore China's approaches to using its economic, trade, investment, and financial power for the pursuit of its political, security, and strategic interests at the regional and global levels. The volume addresses three major issue areas in particular. The first issue pertains to how Beijing has used its economic clout to protect what it perceives as its "core interests" in its external relations. Three cases are included: the Taiwan issue, human rights, and territorial dispute in the South China Sea. The second major area of inquiry focuses on how China has employed its economic power in its key bilateral relations, including relations with Japan, North Korea, the United States, and other states in the East Asian region. The third issue concerns China's economic statecraft in the global context. It addresses the impacts of China's economic power and policy on the transformation of the global financial structure, developments in Africa, the international intellectual property rights regime, and China's food security relations with the outside world.

The book provides an in-depth analysis of EU-China cooperation mechanisms with a focus on efforts to jointly address global challenges. It zooms in on the cooperation mechanisms for addressing three specific global challenges that rank high on the bilateral agenda: mitigating climate change, controlling nuclear non-proliferation and addressing the poverty-insecurity nexus. From this empirical analysis, the book assesses the characteristics and challenges of the EU’s emerging “network diplomacy” model of dealing with strategic external relations.
