This book constitutes the first full volume dedicated to an academic analysis of British football as depicted on film. From early single-camera silents to its current multi-screen mediations, the repeated treatment of football in British cinema points to the game’s importance not only in the everyday rhythms of national life but also, and especially, its immutable place in the British imaginary landscape. Through close textual analysis together with production and reception histories, this book explores the ways in which professional footballers, amateur players and supporters (the devoted and the demonized) have been represented on the British screen. As well as addressing the joys and sorrows the game necessarily engenders, British football is shown to function as an accessible structure to explore wider issues such as class, race, gender and even the whole notion of ‘Britishness’.

Box to Box

'Even by boxing's standards, Curtis Woodhouse's story is truly remarkable' Ricky Hatton 'As brutally honest as it is gripping, amusing and illuminating' Donald McRae 'A pulsating page-turner of a book' Mail on Sunday The football world is filled with stories of talented young footballers who have thrown it all away before drifting into obscurity. Similarly, the tale of an ageing boxer who won the title against the odds is so familiar it has become a cliche. But put the two stories together and you've got something special: wasted footballers simply don't become boxing champions - at least they didn't before Curtis Woodhouse. Woodhouse had been destined for greatness. At the age of 17 he made...

We're Everywhere, Us

A diary of Liverpool Football Club's 2014/15 season, with a difference. The book may kick off with a chapter on the season opener and end with the last game; but this diary isn't written by a single author. Nor does it focus heavily on the actual soccer. Instead, We're Everywhere, Us is a collaboration--a compilation of pieces offering a different personal take on what it means to support Liverpool. Friendship. Family. Travel. Tragedy. Work. Each piece is a long, rich read, completely unique and distinct from those that precede and follow it. Some of the finest writers on Liverpool FC are involved, including Simon Hughes, Kevin Sampson, Melissa Reddy, Paul Tomkins, Mike Nevin, and Steve Kelly. There are also contributions from Liverpool supporters living abroad, which gives We're Everywhere, Us a truly international feel--while opposition fans add yet another perspective on Liverpool FC's season, our captivating city and proud history.

David Fairclough started just 92 games in an eight year Liverpool career yet his standing as one of the most famous goalscorers in the club's illustrious history is without question. Another 62 appearances as substitute boosted his Anfield career total and it was for his role as Liverpool's number 12 for which he is best remembered. Fairclough was, and always will be, the original 'Supersub'. Yet, it is a moniker he loved and loathed in equal measure and one he felt ultimately held him back in his career. In this refreshingly candid autobiography Fairclough relives the highs and lows of a colourful career. He recalls his meteoric rise to stardom and the priceless contribution he made to the ...
