Europe and the Black Sea Region
When the scientific study of the Black Sea Region began in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, initially commissioned by adjacent powers such as the Habsburg and the Russian empires, this terra incognita was not yet considered part of Europe. The eighteen chapters of this volume show a broad range of thematic foci and theoretical approaches - the result of the enormous richness of the European macrocosm and the BSR. The microcosms of the many different case studies under scrutiny, however, demonstrate the historical dimension of exchange between the allegedly opposite poles of `East' and `West' and underscore the importance of mutual influences in the development of Europe and the BSR.
Novel Trends in Electroorganic Synthesis
Among the topics of interest to organic chemists today are the versatility and uniqueness of electrolysis procedures in organic synthesis, as well as the latest advances in methodology, including basic concepts for the design of electrolysis conditions and apparatus. The International Symposium on Electroorganic Synthesis met in Kurashiki, Japan, in September 1997 for lectures on all aspects of current research in the field. This volume comprising the papers from the symposium consists of two parts. Part I, Electrooxidation, includes papers on alcohols and phenols, olefins and aromatics, halogenation, polymers, and electrodes, among others. Included in Part II, Electroreduction, are papers on carbonyl compounds, halogen-containing compounds, reaction with EG bases, and metal complexes. The novel trends presented here will be of special interest to researchers and graduate students in electroorganic chemistry and are a valuable resource for all organic chemists.

Deixis and Demonstratives in Oceanic Languages
When we communicate, we communicate in a certain context, and this context shapes our utterances. Natural languages are context-bound and deixis 'concerns the ways in which languages encode or grammaticalise features of the context of utterance or speech event, and thus also concerns ways in which the interpretation of utterances depends on the analysis of that context of utterance' (Stephen Levinson). The systems of deixis and demonstratives in the Oceanic languages represented in the contributions to this volume illustrate the fascinating complexity of spatial reference in these languages. Some of the studies presented here highlight social aspects of deictic reference illustrating de Leon's point that 'reference is a collaborative task' . It is hoped that this anthology will contribute to a better understanding of this area and provoke further studies in this extremely interesting, though still rather underdeveloped, research area.
Electroorganic Synthesis
This book provides the first practical, hands-on approach to electroorganic synthesis. It includes many details of the experimental design of cells, electrodes, electrolytes, and so on, as well as methods and reaction conditions for a large range of chemical transformations.
