Anna Leonhardt' s (b. Pforzheim, 1981; lives and works in New York and Leipzig) paintings probe her own experiences and moods, while also referencing works of literature and quoting phenomena in the history of her craft. Abstract surfaces composed of numerous layers that break the two-dimensional bounds of the canvas engender a physical and imagined space that is further expanded by the interrelations between the pictorial elements, an imaginary communication with other works of art, and the beholders. The publication Touching Space presents Anna Leonhardt' s most recent works. A compendium of writings on the subject of space by the phenomenologist Franz Xaver Baier and the artist' s correspondence with the curator Sophia Pietryga complement the imposing illustrations. The book is released in conjunction with the eponymous solo exhibition at Galerie She BAM! Laetitia Gorsy, Leipzig.Anna Leonhardt studied painting and graphic art at the Dresden University of Fine Arts (HfBK) from 2002- 2008, completing her education with postgraduate training with Ralf Kerbach until 2010.

Michael Sailstorfer

This book discusses Michael Sailstorfer's most recent work, with a special focus on issues of space and site specificity. Pieces such as Study for Breathing House (a detonation which causes a house to shrink and expand, almost imperceptibly), Endless column (a light beaming into the sky through an open ceiling) or Andy Warhol (perfume dispenser) involve light, smell, energy, and noise as suitable material for the artist's sculptural interventions. Characterized by a wild sense of absurdism, subversive poetry and melancholic humor, Sailstorfer's oeuvre can be read against the backdrop of the conceptualization of space. Along the lines of philosopher Franz Xaver Baier's texts, his work involve...

In this book, the author develops a relational concept of space that encompasses social structure, the material world of objects and bodies, and the symbolic dimension of the social world. Löw’s guiding principle is the assumption that space emerges in the interplay between objects, structures and actions. Based on a critical discussion of classic theories of space, Löw develops a new dynamic theory of space that accounts for the relational context in which space is constituted. This innovative view on the interdependency of material, social, and symbolic dimensions of space also permits a new perspective on architecture and urban development.

The Oxford Handbook of Ecocriticism

The Oxford Handbook of Ecocriticism explores a range of critical perspectives used to analyze literature, film, and the visual arts in relation to the natural environment. Since the publication of field-defining works by Lawrence Buell, Jonathan Bate, and Cheryll Glotfelty and Harold Fromm in the 1990s, ecocriticism has become a conventional paradigm for critical analysis alongside queer theory, deconstruction, and postcolonial studies. The field includes numerous approaches, genres, movements, and media, as the essays collected here demonstrate. The contributors come from around the globe and, similarly, the literature and media covered originate from several countries and continents. Taken...
