This book contains the abstracts of the presentations presented at the 50th annual meeting of the International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE), held in Edinburgh, UK. The enduring aim of the ISAE is to encourage and support basic and applied research into the behaviour of animals as related to their use by humans. Ever since a small group of veterinarians first met in Edinburgh to form the Society of Veterinary Ethology (SVE), inspirational ethologists and veterinarians have helped shape the field of Applied Ethology. Scientists such as Niko Tinbergen, Karl Von Frisch and Konrad Lorenz, joint awardees of the 1973 Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine, have played an important part in helping to develop this subject. The 2016 ISAE conference will bring together applied ethologists from all over the world to share new discoveries and to discuss ways forward, under the general conference theme of 'Past and Future: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants'.

Is the affirmation or intensification of life a value in itself? Can life itself be thought? This book breaks new ground in religious and philosophical thinking on the concept of life. It captures a moment in which such thinking is regaining its force and attraction for scholars, and the relevance of thought to social, cultural, political and religious dilemmas about how and why to live. Bringing together original contributions by highly distinguished authors in the field of Continental philosophy of religion, including John D. Caputo, Pamela Sue Anderson, Philip Goodchild, Alison Martin and Don Cupitt, this book has a distinctiveness based on its refusal to sit easily within either secular ...

Participatory Research in More-than-Human Worlds

Participatory Research in More-than-Human Worlds

Socio-environmental crises are currently transforming the conditions for life on this planet, from climate change, to resource depletion, biodiversity loss and long-term pollutants. The vast scale of these changes, affecting land, sea and air have prompted calls for the ‘ecologicalisation’ of knowledge. This book adopts a much needed ‘more-than-human’ framework to grasp these complexities and challenges. It contains multidisciplinary insights and diverse methodological approaches to question how to revise, reshape and invent methods in order to work with non-humans in participatory ways. The book offers a framework for thinking critically about the promises and potentialities of participation from within a more-than-human paradigm, and opens up trajectories for its future development. It will be of interest to those working in the environmental humanities, animal studies, science and technology studies, ecology, and anthropology.

How the Leopard Changed Its Spots

Do genes explain life? Can advances in evolutionary and molecular biology account for what we look like, how we behave, and why we die? This intervention into biological thinking argues that such genetic reductionism has limits. It shows how an understanding of the self-organizing patterns of networks is necessary for making sense of nature.
