ESOP '92
This volume contains selected papers presented at the European Symposium on Programming (ESOP) held jointly with the seventeeth Colloquium on Trees in Algebra and Programming (CAAP) in Rennes, France, February 26-28, 1992 (the proceedings of CAAP appear in LNCS 581). The previous symposiawere held in France, Germany, and Denmark. Every even year, as in 1992, CAAPis held jointly with ESOP. ESOP addresses fundamental issues and important developments in the specification and implementation of programming languages and systems. It continues lines begun in France and Germany under the names "Colloque sur la Programmation" and the GI workshop on "Programmiersprachen und Programmentwicklung". The programme committee received 71 submissions, from which 28 have been selected for inclusion in this volume.

Programming Languages and Systems
Comparison is a powerful cognitive research tool in science since it does 'across studies' to evaluate similarities and differences, e.g. across taxa or diseases. This book deals with comparative research on plant disease epidemics. Comparisons are done in specifically designed experiments or with posterior analyses. From the apparently unlimited diversity of epidemics of hundreds of diseases, comparative epidemiology may eventually extract a number of basic types. These findings are very important to crop protection. Plant disease epidemiology, being the ecological branch of plant pathology, may also be of value to ecologists, but also epidemiologists in the areas of animal or human diseases may find interesting results, applicable to their areas of research.

Automata, Languages and Programming
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 25th International Colloquium on Automata, Languages and Programming, ICALP'98, held in Aalborg, Denmark, in July 1998. The 70 revised full papers presented together with eight invited contributions were carefully selected from a total of 182 submissions. Logic Programming and Automated Reasoning
LPAR is an international conference series aimed at bringing together researchers interested in logic programming and automated reasoning. The research in logic programming grew out of the research in automated reasoning in the early 1970s. Later, the implementation techniques known from logic programming were used in implementing theorem proving systems. Results from both fields applied to deductive databases. This volume contains the proceedings of LPAR '93, which was organized by the Russian Association for Logic Programming. The volume contains 35 contributed papers selected from 84 submissions, together with an invited paper by Peter Wegner entitled "Reasoning versus modeling in computer science".

Secure Internet Programming
Large-scale open distributed systems provide an infrastructure for assembling global applications on the basis of software and hardware components originating from multiple sources. Open systems rely on publicly available standards to permit heterogeneous components to interact. The Internet is the archetype of a large-scale open distributed system; standards such as HTTP, HTML, and XML, together with the widespread adoption of the Java language, are the cornerstones of many distributed systems. This book surveys security in large-scale open distributed systems by presenting several classic papers and a variety of carefully reviewed contributions giving the results of new research and development. Part I provides background requirements and deals with fundamental issues in trust, programming, and mobile computations in large-scale open distributed systems. Part II contains descriptions of general concepts, and Part III presents papers detailing implementations of security concepts.
Programming Languages and Systems
ETAPS2002wasthe?fthinstanceoftheEuropeanJointConferencesonTheory and Practice of Software. ETAPS is an annual federated conference that was established in 1998 by combining a number of existing and new conferences. This year it comprised 5 conferences (FOSSACS, FASE, ESOP, CC, TACAS), 13 satellite workshops (ACL2, AGT, CMCS, COCV, DCC, INT, LDTA, SC, SFEDL, SLAP, SPIN, TPTS, and VISS), 8 invited lectures (not including those speci?c to the satellite events), and several tutorials. The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system - velopmentprocess,includingspeci?cation,design,implementation,analysis,and improvement. The languages, methodologies, and tools which support these - tivities are all well within its scope. Di?erent blends of theory and practice are represented, with an inclination towards theory with a practical motivation on one hand and soundly-based practice on the other. Many of the issues involved in software design apply to systems in general, including hardware systems, and the emphasis on software is not intended to be exclusive.
