Practices of Abstract Art

  • Categories: Art

Recent decades have seen a renewed interest in the phenomenon of abstract art, particularly regarding its ability to speak to the political, social, and cultural conditions of our times. This collection of essays, which looks at historical examples of artistic practice from the early pioneers of abstraction to late modernism, investigates the ambivalent role that abstraction has played in the visual arts and cultures of the last hundred years. In addition, it explores various theoretical and critical narratives that seek to articulate new perspectives on its legacy in the visual arts. From metaphysical considerations and philosophical reflections to debates on interculturality and global perspectives, the contributors examine and reconsider abstraction in the visual arts from a contemporary point of view that acknowledges the many social, economic, cultural, and political aspects of artistic practice. As such, the volume progressively expands the boundaries of thinking about abstract art by engaging it in its increasingly diverse cultural environment.

Carl Zuckmayer Criticism

Together with Bertolt Brecht and Gerhart Hauptmann, Carl Zuckmayer (1890-1977) was one of the most popular and significant German dramatists of the twentieth century. His folk play The Merry Vineyard (1925) marked the end of German expressionism; his comedy The Captain of Kopenick (1931), a scathing satire on German militarism, and his drama The Devil's General (1946), about a Nazi general and German resistance, were some of the most frequently performed plays in recent German theater history. During the Third Reich Zuckmayer's works were banned in Germany while their author lived as an exile in the United States, trying to survive as a farmer in Vermont. For that reason, Zuckmayer scholarsh...

Classic Restaurants of Milwaukee

"Milwaukee may be known for beer, brats and custard, but the city's food history is even richer and tastier. At the Public Natatorium, diners supped at an old public pool and watched a dolphin show at the same time. Solly's, Oriental Drugs and others nurtured a thriving lunch counter culture that all ages enjoyed. Supper clubs and steakhouses like Five O'Clock reigned supreme. And we can't forget about the more illicit side of Milwaukee meals, like the mafia hangouts and a local fast-food chain with a mysterious resemblance to a national brand. Pairing the history of classic restaurants with recipes of favorite dishes, author Jennifer Billock explores both the well-known and the quirkier sides of Milwaukee's dining past."--Provided by publisher.
