Commonwealth Vs. Henry K. Goodwin
Goodwin shot Swan in an office in Lawrence, Mass., in 1885, believing that Swan was trying to cheat him out of his telephone patents. He was convicted of second-degree murder. Defended by General Benjamin Butler, Goodwin put on a creative defense of insanity, aggravated by his prolonged and arduous imprisonment at Andersonville during the War.
