Introduction to Frustrated Magnetism

Introduction to Frustrated Magnetism

The field of highly frustrated magnetism has developed considerably and expanded over the last 15 years. Issuing from canonical geometric frustration of interactions, it now extends over other aspects with many degrees of freedom such as magneto-elastic couplings, orbital degrees of freedom, dilution effects, and electron doping. Its is thus shown here that the concept of frustration impacts on many other fields in physics than magnetism. This book represents a state-of-the-art review aimed at a broad audience with tutorial chapters and more topical ones, encompassing solid-state chemistry, experimental and theoretical physics.

Pathogenesis and Clinical Practice in Gastroenterology

Pathogenesis and Clinical Practice in Gastroenterology

The translation of new molecular understanding of disease into clinical practice in gastroenterology is a special challenge. The Falk Symposium No. 160, entitled ‘Pathogenesis and Clinical Practice in Gastroenterology’, held 15-16 June 2007 in Portorož, Slovenia, provided a stimulating framework to bridge discussions from bench to bedside. The proceedings of the symposium are contained in this book, and the unifying theme is the growing understanding of inflammation as a driving force in chronic disease leading to disability and malignancy. Aspects of early detection - endoscopically or via molecular markers - are covered as well as in-depth discussions of the validation of new findings in clinical practice. Whilst on a molecular basis gastroenterologists and hepatologists try to shed light on the same intracellular pathways, clinical implications such as surveillance of cancer in IBD or chronic hepatitis with cirrhosis have to be tailored to specific needs. New therapeutic agents - approved or on the horizon of early clinical studies - will dramatically change the options of patients with chronic disease such as Crohn’s disease, viral hepatitis or hepatocellular carcinoma.

Spectroscopy of Emerging Materials

Spectroscopy of Emerging Materials

A comprehensive discussion of the key role of modern spectroscopic investigations in interdisciplinary materials science and engineering, covering emerging materials that are either absolutely novel or well-known materials with recently discovered, exciting properties. The types of spectroscopy discussed include optical, electronic and magnetic, UV-visible absorption, Rayleigh scattering, photoluminescence, vibrational, magnetic resonance, electron energy loss, EXAFS, XANES, optical tomography, time-resolved spectroscopy, and point contact spectroscopy. The materials studied are highly topical, with a focus on carbon and silicon nanomaterials including nanotubes, fullerenes, nanoclusters, metallic superconducting phases, molecular materials, magnetic and charge-stripe oxides, and biomaterials. Theoretical treatments are presented of molecular vibrational dynamics, vibration-induced decay of electronic excited states, nanoscale spin-orbit coupling in 2D Si-based structures, and the growth of semiconductor clusters.

Liber amicorum Paul LemmensYou can pre-order this liber amicorum for 99 euros until 22 October 2019. After that date, you will pay 145 euros. If you would like to be added to the pre-registration list, please mention this in your order. You can also order the book by mail (mail@intersentia.be) and pay by invoice. With this tribute book we have tried to avoid the classic pitfalls. The work contains contributions that are focused on human rights, in all their diversity, but with a strong emphasis on the European Convention on Human Rights. The contributions were also subjected to a stringent peer review, so that this book could just as well be a classically edited academic work. It therefore meets, we hope, the highest academic standards, as Paul Lemmens has always embodied them. The very international crowd of authors, whose reputation is known, already guarantees quality.
