Volume 2 of this series concentrates on the use of synchrotron radiation which covers that region of the electromagnetic spectrum which extends from about 10eV to 3keV in photon energy and is essentially the region where the radiation is strongly absorbed by atmospheric gases. It therefore has to make extensive use of a high vacuum to transport the radiation to the workstation where the presence of hard X-rays can cause extensive damage to both the optics and the targets used in the experimental rigs. The topics chosen for this volume have been limited to the disciplines of physics and chemistry.

Chromaffin Cells

This volume covers the most up-to-date methods and techniques used to further the understanding of chromaffin cell biology and pharmacology. Chapters guide readers through the basic mechanisms that regulate the stimulus-secretion coupling, chromaffin, tumor-derived cell PC-12 , morphology, biochemistry, pharmacology, electrophysiology, and electrochemistry. Written in the successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Chromaffin Cells: Methods and Protocols aims to be a useful practical guide to researches to help further their study in this field.

Religion, Government and Political Culture in Early Modern Germany

The story of conflict in an island community offers a valuable case study for the analysis of early modern German political culture. Investigations range from interpersonal relations to dynamics of civic church and imperial government. Chronicled throughout are the interactions of two opposing principles in modern society 'secular' vs 'spiritual' and 'public' vs 'private'. These are found to operate both discursively and institutionally, and are deployed to help establish 'sovereign authority' ( Obrigkeit ), as well as to articulate resistance in the form of 'bourgeois republican ideology'.
