This book explores how 15 immigrants from German-speaking Switzerland in Australia make sense of their migratory experience, of building a new life in a different language. It does so by examining their written and oral life stories. The analysis takes two complementary perspectives: Firstly, the construction of language identities is studied through the language practices and attitudes discussed and displayed by the participants. Secondly, the ways in which they create coherence in their life stories focuses on autobiographical identities where language is a medium of sense-making across their life course. The combined perspectives highlight the diversity among the participants and the complexities of language and identity construction in the context of migration.
The Catholic Bohemian German of Ellis County, Kansas
This work focuses on the Catholic Bohemian German dialect of Ellis County, Kansas, in the United States. It is a unique Bavarian dialect spoken by descendants of settlers to this area in west central Kansas from Bukovina, then an Austrian province. The Catholic Bohemian Germans were one of two distinct groups of Bukovina immigrants to the Ellis area as early as the 1880s. They found their way to the United States and Kansas via Bukovina from the Bohemian Forest, today situated in the Czech Republic. Their German dialect faces its linguistic demise. This study documents the grammar and the lexicon of the Catholic Bohemian German dialect, based on dialect interviews. In addition it sheds light on its geographical origin in the Bohemian Forest.

Wilhelm Wagner (1803-1877), son of Peter Wagner, was born in Dürkheim, Germany. He married Friedericke Odenwald (1812-1893). They had nine children. They emigrated and settled in Illinois. His brother, Julius Wagner (1816-1903) married Emilie M. Schneider (1820-1896). They had seven children. They emigrated and settled in Texas.

Dialect syntax has proven to be an invaluable data source for theoretical syntax, and theoretical syntax has provided useful analytical tools for uncovering fascinating grammatical properties of dialects. The focus of the essays is the investigation of the sociolinguistic phenomenon of German linguistic enclaves with respect to language contact, language history, dialectology and language politics. The multifaceted linguistic and sociolinguistic developments, which German language varieties separated from the German-speaking homeland undergo, converge in the final analysis in the juxtaposition of language maintenance and language loss.
