The Digital Musician explores what it means to be a musician in the digital age. It examines musical skills, cultural awareness and artistic identity through the prism of recent technological innovations. New technologies, and especially the new digital technologies, mean that anyone can produce music without musical training. This book asks why make music? what music to make? and how do we know what is good?

Unencumbered Human Movement in Interactive Immersive Environments

This book outlines six interactive installation works that form a body of research concerned with the development of interactive, responsive installation works that use the gestures of the unencumbered human body as their central activation and control mechanism. They are therefore an exploration of interactivity, interface technologies and approaches to mapping the sensed data derived from movement in the installation space, onto sound and vision generation schemes. I have conditioned this exploration with a desire to produce art installations; three-dimensional environments that occupy an entire gallery space. The installations were intended to be immersive, and to engage the 'inhabitant' in a direct, visceral and dynamic way. It was intended that the visitor to the installation would require no prior knowledge of the system and, additionally, would require no knowledge of musical practice or the visual arts.

The first work to propose a comprehensive musicological framework to study sound-based music, a rapidly developing body of work that includes electroacoustic art music, turntable composition, and acoustic and digital sound installations. The art of sound organization, also known as electroacoustic music, uses sounds not available to traditional music making, including prerecorded, synthesized, and processed sounds. The body of work of such sound-based music (which includes electroacoustic art music, turntable composition, computer games, and acoustic and digital sound installations) has developed more rapidly than its musicology. Understanding the Art of Sound Organization proposes the first...

Practice-led Research, Research-led Practice in the Creative Arts

  • Categories: Art

This book addresses one of the most exciting and innovative developments within higher education: the rise in prominence of the creative arts and the accelerating recognition that creative practice is a form of research. The book considers how creative practice can lead to research insights through what is often known as practice-led research. But unlike other books on practice-led research, it balances this with discussion of how research can impact positively on creative practice through research-led practice. The editors posit an iterative and web-like relationship between practice and research. Essays within the book cover a wide range of disciplines including creative writing, dance, mu...

How digital technologies affect the way we conceive of the self and its relation to the world, considered through the lens of media art practices. In Tactics of Interfacing, Ksenia Fedorova explores how digital technologies affect the way we conceive of the self and its relation to the world. With the advent of ubiquitous computing, the self becomes an object of technological application, increasingly defined by data received from tracking technologies. Subtly, these technologies encourage versions of ourselves that are easier to interpret computationally. Fedorova views these shifts in self-perception through the lens of contemporary media art practices, examining a range of artistic tactic...

Walking to Magdalena

In Walking to Magdalena, Seth Schermerhorn explores a question that is central to the interface of religious studies and Native American and indigenous studies: What have Native peoples made of Christianity? By focusing on the annual pilgrimage of the Tohono O’odham to Magdalena in Sonora, Mexico, Schermerhorn examines how these indigenous people of southern Arizona have made Christianity their own. This walk serves as the entry point for larger questions about what the Tohono O’odham have made of Christianity. With scholarly rigor and passionate empathy, Schermerhorn offers a deep understanding of Tohono O’odham Christian traditions as practiced in everyday life and in the words of th...

Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures 2005

MARTENS Bob and BROWN Andre Co-conference Chairs, CAAD Futures 2005 Computer Aided Architectural Design is a particularly dynamic field that is developing through the actions of architects, software developers, researchers, technologists, users, and society alike. CAAD tools in the architectural office are no longer prominent outsiders, but have become ubiquitous tools for all professionals in the design disciplines. At the same time, techniques and tools from other fields and uses, are entering the field of architectural design. This is exemplified by the tendency to speak of Information and Communication Technology as a field in which CAAD is embedded. Exciting new combinations are possible for those, who are firmly grounded in an understanding of architectural design and who have a clear vision of the potential use of ICT. CAAD Futures 2005 called for innovative and original papers in the field of Computer Aided Architectural Design, that present rigorous, high-quality research and development work. Papers should point towards the future, but be based on a thorough understanding of the past and present.

An overview of emerging topics, theories, methods, and practices in sonic interactive design, with a focus on the multisensory aspects of sonic experience. Sound is an integral part of every user experience but a neglected medium in design disciplines. Design of an artifact's sonic qualities is often limited to the shaping of functional, representational, and signaling roles of sound. The interdisciplinary field of sonic interaction design (SID) challenges these prevalent approaches by considering sound as an active medium that can enable novel sensory and social experiences through interactive technologies. This book offers an overview of the emerging SID research, discussing theories, meth...

Interactivity, Game Creation, Design, Learning, and Innovation

This book constitutes the refereed post-conference proceedings of two conferences: The 8th EAI International Conference on ArtsIT, Interactivity and Game Creation (ArtsIT 2019), and the 4th EAI International Conference on Design, Learning, and Innovation (DLI 2019). Both conferences were hosed in Aalborg, Denmark, and took place November 6-8, 2019. The 61 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from 98 submissions. The papers represent a forum for the dissemination of cutting-edge research results in the area of arts, design and technology, including open related topics like interactivity and game creation.
