Since the invention of the first working laser in 1960, development of these devices has progressed at an unprecedented rate, to the extent that the laser is now a common part of everyday life, from the semiconductor laser used in CD players and telecommunication systems to the high power eximer lasers used in manufacturing processes. Metal Ions in Biological Systems is devoted to increasing our understanding of the relationship between the chemistry of metals and life processes. The volumes reflect the interdisciplinary nature of bioinorganic chemistry and coordinate the efforts of researchers in the fields of biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, coordination chemistry, environmental chemistry, biophysics, pharmacy, and medicine. Volumes deal with such topics as the formation, stability, structure, and reactivity of biological compounds of low and high molecular weight containing metal ions; the metabolism and transport of metal ions and their complexes; and new models of complicated natural structures and processes. Randolph Field

Once touted as the "West Point of the air" in the pre-Air Force Academy years, Randolph Field/Air Force Base is famous for its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, its iconic Administration Building (nicknamed the "Taj Mahal"), and its rectangular layout. Allowed by the Army hierarchy to design its own installation from the ground up, the Army Air Corps hit a home run in design uniqueness and functionality. When the Corps of Engineers built the base, working from 1928 to 1931, it was its biggest project since the Panama Canal. Randolph has been a popular assignment location for Air Force members for over 80 years and is currently home to the 12th Flying Training Wing, the Air Education and Training Command Headquarters, and the Air Force Personnel Center. Thousands have passed through Randolph's gates as students and permanent personnel, and many have chosen to live in the San Antonio area after discharge or retirement. Carefully landscaped with trees and shrubbery from the very beginning, Randolph is the "showplace of the Air Force."

Selected Works of Frederick J. Almgren, Jr.

Selected Works of Frederick J. Almgren, Jr.

This volume offers a unique collection of some of the work of Frederick J. Almgren, Jr., the man most noted for defining the shape of geometric variational problems and for his role in founding The Geometry Center. Included in the volume are the following: a summary by Sheldon Chang of the famous 1700 page paper on singular sets of area-minimizing $m$-dimensional surfaces in $Rn$, a detailed summary by Brian White of Almgren's contributions to mathematics, his own announcements of several longer papers, important shorter papers, and memorable expository papers. Almgren's enthusiasm for the subject and his ability to locate mathematically beautiful problems that were "ready to be solved" attracted many students who further expanded the subject into new areas. Many of these former students are now known for the clarity of their expositions and for the beauty of the problems that they work on. As Almgren's former graduate student, wife, and colleague, Professor Taylor has compiled an important volume on an extraordinary mathematician. This collection presents a fine comprehensive view of the man's mathematical legacy
