Rev. George Bryce (1844-1931), Presbyterian educator, churchman, scientist and historican, came to Winnipeg to found Manitoba College in 1871. As a member of the elite group of businessmen and professionals who came to dominate Manitoba society after 1870, he participated in the creation of many of the basic social and cultural institutions of the Province. Using his history books, pamphlets, sermons and papers, this thesis analyzes his attitudes, mores and convictions in an attempt to reconstruct his worldview. Since this was a worldview shared with others of his class, this study is intended to be a contribution to the social history of the Winnipeg elite, 1871-1920. Bryce's personality wa...

The Remarkable History Of The Hudson'S Bay Company

A full and well-researched account of the Hudson's Bay Company's significant role to the discovery and growth of Canada can be found in George Bryce's book The Remarkable History of the Hudson's Bay Company. Bryce looks at the history of the corporation, tracing its origins as a fur-trading enterprise and its development into a significant economic concern with a vast network of trade stations dispersed across the Canadian wilderness, from its inception in 1670 to the early 20th century. The book also discusses the challenges that the firm faced, such as competition with other merchants and the sometimes abrasive dealings with Indigenous peoples. Bryce looks at the company's place in Canadian politics as well as how it has affected the development of the country's economy, infrastructure, and culture. An exhaustive and instructive history of one of Canada's most significant institutions may be found in its full in The Remarkable History of the Hudson's Bay Company. It is a highly helpful resource for anybody with an interest in Canadian history, the fur trade, or the growth of commerce and industry in North America.

The present work tells the romantic story of the Settlement of Lord Selkirk's Colonists in Manitoba. It is chiefly confined to Red River Settlement as it existed-a unique community, which in 1870 became the present Province of Manitoba. It is a sympathetic study of what one writer has called-"Britain's One Utopia." First published in 1909 and written by Professor George Bryce (1844-1931), a Presbyterian minister and a prolific author.

A Thousand Miles of Prairie

A Thousand Miles of Prairie is a fascinating look at Manitoba's early boom years (1880-1910) through the eyes and words of some of the most interesting personalities of early Winnipeg. This collection brings together 14 pieces from the first decades of the Manitoba Historical Society, when its lectures were attended by the provinceís political and cultural elite. Jim Blanchard has chosen selections that give us a vivid taste of the diversity of intellectual life in turn of the century Manitoba. Besides writings by early historians such as George Bryce and Charles Bell, he includes a paper by the young Ernest Thompson Seton, who writes about his attempts to raise prairie chickens. There is also a description of the last passenger pigeons found in Manitoba. The collection includes lively personal reminscences, such as Gilbert McMicken, Canada's first spymaster, talking about foiling a Fenian raid on Winnipeg, and Archbishop Samuel Matheson, who tells about his boyhood adventures in the great Red River floods of the 1860s.
