This text provides, at the undergraduate level, a quantitative introduction to quantum mechanical concepts and their application in spectroscopy. The text develops the quantum approach starting with the Schröedinger equation. The basic approval of separation of variables is developed in detail for simple systems, and, although the separation of variables and the solution of the Schröedinger equation is the unifying theme, the difficult mathematics that would be involved in more complicated systems is avoided by arguing the analogy to the thoroughly studied simple systems. As soon as the quantum-mechanical description of each type is obtained, an application to chemical systems of that type is made, and the connection between theory and application promoted.
