Neurodegenerative Diseases: From Gut-Brain Axis to Brain Microbiome

While there are growing line of evidence for the role of the gut microbiome in different neurodegenerative diseases, the role and even the existence of the brain microbiome is only starting to be uncovered. Indeed, the brain was long considered to be a sterile environment and only recent studies have shown the presence of bacteria and fungi in the human central nervous system, and even inhabiting brain cells. The so called “brain microbiome” is appealing and immediately drew attention, since it is highly possible that microorganisms could have profound direct effects on a variety of processes in the brain, with the non-limiting examples of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental diseases triggering and progression. However, the brain microbiome remains poorly understood and even despite recent technological advances, is has only began to be explored.

Antimicrobial resistance has existed in nature long before the discovery of antibiotics. The mechanisms of resistance are prevalent among the bacterial population. Over a period of time and facilitated by indiscriminate usage of antibiotics, these mechanisms are transferred from one type of bacteria to another, including the pathogenic ones. In addition, the rate of discovery of novel antimicrobials is much slower than the rate of evolution of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, there is a need for alternative strategies to control antimicrobial resistance to save lives. In this book, the novel strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance are described, emphasizing collaborative measures of control. We describe the concerted efforts undertaken by global communities to combat antimicrobial resistance in detail. The most efficient strategy could be a behavioral change towards indiscriminate consumption, usage, and prescription of antibiotics.

With the recent discovery that amyloid beta protein, the cause of plaques in Alzheimer's disease, is an antimicrobial peptide produced in response to infection, many researchers are focusing on the role infection plays in the development of Alzheimer's disease. Brain studies have also identified a number of different viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa in the postmortem brain specimens of Alzheimer's patients. Infection (particularly chronic, latent and persistent infections) causes an immune response that leads to inflammation and brain cell degeneration, which are characteristic features of Alzheimer's disease. Sources of infection in Alzheimer's disease vary from childhood infections t...

Brain related disorders are among the most challenging health issues of our time. The development of effective therapeutic and preventive strategies for these disorders relies on a comprehensive understanding of the underlying causative mechanisms. And, until recently, these mechanisms have remained somewhat elusive. The newly discovered pivotal role of the intestinal microbiome in brain health, functionality, and resistance to disease is revolutionizing neuroscience. The Microbiome and the Brain, through the contributions of some of the most forward thinking researchers and clinicians in the field, comprehensively reveals the leading edge of our understanding of the fundamental role of gut ...

George Tooker

For more than 60 years, George Tooker (1920-2011) created luminous and often enigmatic paintings, addressing issues from alienation and the dehumanizing aspects of contemporary society to personal meditations on the human condition. From the Cold War urban purgatories and bureaucratic paranoia of his early paintings to his later warm, glowing images of lovers embracing in fields or found in windows, Tooker's spiritual vision ultimately stands as a quest for the endless possibilities of intimacy, compassion and tolerance. Widespread public recognition first came to Tooker through his best-known painting, "Subway" (1950), a definitive image of anxiety and dread. His more utopian themes of peace, brotherhood and reconciliation would find expression in such works as "Embrace of Peace II" (1988). Published in conjunction with DC Moore Gallery's memorial exhibition, George Tooker: Reality Recurs as a Dream features paintings from every period of Tooker's long career.
