“Buyurdum ki....” – The Whole World of Ottomanica and Beyond
This book is dedicated to Claudia Römer and brings together 33 contributions spanning a period from the 15th to the 20th century and covering the wide range of topics with which the honouree is engaged. The volume is divided into six parts that present current research on language, literature, and style as well as newer approaches and perspectives in dealing with sources and terminologies. Aspects such as conquest, administration, and financing of provinces are found as well as problems of endowments and the circulation of goods in the Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire. Another main topic is dedicated to minorities and their role and situation in various provinces and cities of the Ottoman Empire, as represented by various sources. But also topics like conversion, morality and control are illuminated. Finally, the volume provides an insight into the late Ottoman and early republican period, in which some previously unpublished sources (such as travel letters, memoirs) are presented and (re)discussed. The book is not only aimed at scholars and students of the Ottoman Empire; the thematic range is also of interest to linguists, historians, and cultural historians.

Women as Scribes
Professor Beach's book on female scribes in twelfth-century Bavaria - a full-length study of the role of women copyists in the Middle Ages - is underpinned by the notion that the scriptorium was central to the intellectual revival of the Middle Ages and that women played a role in this renaissance. The author examines the exceptional quantity of evidence of female scribal activity in three different religious communities, pointing out the various ways in which the women worked - alone, with other women, and even alongside men - to produce books for monastic libraries, and discussing why their work should have been made visible, whereas that of other female scribes remains invisible. Beach's focus on manuscript production, and the religious, intellectual, social and economic factors which shaped that production, enables her to draw wide-ranging conclusions of interest not only to palaeographers but also to those interested in reading, literacy, religion and gender history.

Ein anonymer Bericht in einer Berliner Zeitung lanciert bereits kurz nach Rudolfs Tod die bis heute bekannten Gerüchte über Krankheit, Drogenabhängigkeit oder Wahnsinn als mögliche Auslöser für seine Tat. Haslingers Buch bietet eine neue, ganz andere Sicht auf die Persönlichkeit und den Charakter Rudolfs. Sie stützt sich in erster Linie auf Originaldokumente, wie über 1000 Briefe von und an den Kronprinzen sowie Beurteilungen und Dokumente von Zeitgenossen. Rudolfs Korrespondenz und sein dichtes Arbeitsprogramm bis Ende Jänner 1889 belegen seinen Arbeitseifer sowie sein Interesse an seinen Verpflichtungen und lassen keinen depressiven Menschen erkennen. In diesem Licht scheint die »offizielle« Selbstmordversion hinterfragenswert.
