Urban and Rural Change in West Germany
Originally published in 1983. Attention is focused in this book on the principal functional, spatial and morphological changes which had taken place within West Germany’s uniquely arranged mosaic of cities, towns and intervening rural areas during the postwar period. The topics covered here have been carefully selected as key foci of interest, and their thematic approach is supported by a large variety of detailed, local case studies. This title will be of interest to students of urban geography and urban studies.

International and Interarea Comparisons of Income, Output, and Prices
Economists wish to compare prices, real income, and output across countries and regions for many purposes. In the past, such comparisons were made in nominal terms, or by using exchange rates across countries, ignoring differences in price levels and thus distorting the results. Great progress has been made in interspatial comparisons in the past thirty years, but descriptions and discussions of the new measures have been scattered in unpublished or inaccessible papers. International and Interarea Comparisons of Income, Output, and Prices includes discussions of developments in the United Nations International Comparison Program, the largest effort in this field, and in the ICOP program on the production side, including efforts in both to extend the comparisons to the formerly planned economies. Other papers in this volume explore new programs on interspatial comparisons within the United States. There are also theoretical papers on how interspatial comparisons should be made and several examples of uses of such comparisons.
Causes and consequences of the gender-specific migration from East to West Germany
Obwohl die deutsche Wiedervereinigung mehr als 25 Jahre zurückliegt, bestehen bis heute Unterschiede zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschland. Aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Lebensstandards und Chancen ziehen viele Menschen von Ost nach West. Silvia Maja Melzer analysiert theoretisch wie empirisch Determinanten und Konsequenzen der innerdeutschen Migration und beantwortet folgende Fragen: Welche Faktoren sind ausschlaggebend für die Wanderungen von Männern und Frauen? Wie beeinflusst Bildung das geschlechtsspezifische Migrationsverhalten? Wer wandert oder pendelt häufiger, Frauen oder Männer? Um ein möglichst differenziertes Bild von der geschlechtsspezifischen Migration zu erhalten, werden Vergleiche zwischen alleinstehenden Männern und Frauen und solchen in Partnerschaften gezogen. Unterscheidet sich das Migrationsverhalten von ost- und westdeutschen Paaren und Alleinstehenden? Und: Welche finanziellen Konsequenzen zieht die Migration nach sich? Sind Ost-West Migranten glücklicher?
Formal and Informal Work
Informal work – family care, voluntary work, and undeclared or unregulated work – is a critical form of labor in today’s economy, yet remains underanalyzed and examined. This volume develops a comprehensive conceptual framework of informal work and analyses systematically the relationship of formal and informal work. Using a coherent theoretical and methodological approach, this volume explores informal and formal work in six countries and contributes to our empirical knowledge of informal work and its different interrelations with formal work in various societies. A landmark study in the analysis of work, the book demonstrates how the relationship of formal and informal work is developing, how this can be explained in the specific context of the arrangement of work and welfare, and in which ways informal work possibly contributes to social integration and social cohesion.
