I'll Never Walk Alone

In 1963, Gerry and the Pacemakers made pop-music history. Their first three singles, “How Do You Do It?”, “I Like It” and “You'll Never Walk Alone”, went to the top of the UK charts, creating a still-unbeaten record. For twenty-year-old Gerry Marsden it was the start of a long and colourful show-business career. A pioneer of the Liverpool pop explosion that reverberated around the world, he vowed to broaden his horizons and stay on stage for the rest of his life. Brought up in the tough Dingle district of Liverpool, Marsden was a street fighter and enthusiastic boxer, who left school at the age of fifteen to work as a railways delivery boy. Gerry and the Pacemakers were a leading British beat band of the '60s 'Merseybeat' scene. Like the Beatles, they came from Liverpool, were managed by Brian Epstein, with George Martin as producer. They were the 1st artist to top the UK Singles Chart with their first 3 single issues: 'How Do You Do It?', 'I Like It' & 'You'll Never Walk Alone', a feat without equal for 20 years until the mid-'80s, by another Liverpool group, Frankie Goes to Hollywood. One of their most famous songs, 'Ferry Cross the Mersey', refers to the River Mersey, which flows past Liverpool.

In this series of books, based on the hit podcast A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs, Andrew Hickey analyses the history of rock and roll music, from its origins in swing, Western swing, boogie woogie, and gospel, through to the 1990s, grunge, and Britpop. Looking at five hundred representative songs, he tells the story of the musicians who made those records, the society that produced them, and the music they were making. Volume one looks at fifty songs from the origins of rock and roll, starting in 1938 with Charlie Christian's first recording session, and ending in 1956. Along the way, it looks at Louis Jordan, LaVern Baker, the Ink Spots, Fats Domino, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Jackie Brenston, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and many more of the progenitors of rock and roll.
