Unexpected events such as crises challenge organizations and actors who must search for solutions and alternatives. Severe crises can be fatal, especially when they affect entire industries. The ability to identify a viable course to address contingencies brought about by a crisis is critical to determining outcomes. In this paper, we examine the systemic response to a crisis at different levels within an industry in order to obtain a better understanding of industry responses to crises. Through a historical case study of the Italian wine industry renaissance, we show how a sudden and devastating crisis was circumvented to spur a renewed industry imbued with better practices and knowledge. Our findings also show the key role of preconditions in sustaining the renaissance.

The field of strategic management has developed significantly since its birth from "business policy" and "business planning" in the 1960s. Pioneering studies were essentially normative, prescriptive, and often based on in-depth case studies. The evolution of strategic management into a respected field of academic study resulted from the adoption of research methods previously employed in economics. Today, research in strategic management is likely to employ a mixture of methods borrowed from related and unrelated disciplines, such as politcal sciences, psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics, which can be confusing to researchers new to the field. This book provides the reader wit...

Restructuring Strategy

New industries are emerging; others are disrupted; old barriers are crumbling, while new ones are rising. This book seeks to better understand the challenges facing industries, networks, businesses and management during periods of industry structuring and restructuring. Comprising a series of contributions from experts in the field, the book addresses key questions about the opportunities and threats posed by these times of turmoil, including: How do existing industries sustain their competitiveness in such difficult times? How do networks stave off threats from new technologies? How do emerging and incumbent companies survive when growth is not an option? And how should companies be governed during periods of industry structuring and restructuring? In answering these questions, the contributors provide an overview of the strategies that industries, networks, businesses and managers are currently deploying in order to adapt to chaotic conditions and to enhance business profitability. Their responses make a distinctive contribution to scholarly thought and management practice.

Super-Flexibility for Knowledge Enterprises

Living with uncertainty is an everyday reality for most business entities today. This is especially the case for knowledge-intensive enterprises, such as those in technology, financial services, biotechnology and telecommunications, where new innovations and shifting customer preferences can radically change competitive dynamics. The focus of the book is on how knowledge enterprises can harness uncertainty by becoming super-flexible. Based on over 20 years of field research and practical experience in Silicon Valley’s technology ecosystem, the authors present conceptual frameworks, illustrative examples and practical lessons for strategizing, organizing and managing knowledge-based enterprises in turbulent settings.

Many elements of an organization's structure are clearly visible, such as organizational charts, categorizations such as a partnership or corporation, job descriptions, and various legal documents yet these still fall short of illustrating how an organization is designed, interacts with its environment, learns, and evolves. The analogy of the blind men feeling various parts of an elephant and coming up with different perspectives is a real phenomenon with organizational structure as well given that various stakeholders will interact with the organizational structure and come away with very distinct views of how the organization is structured. A single or few perspectives of organizational structure then are insufficient to describe a given organization. Systems and the view of structure as recurring activities are the underlying themes of this book.

The overall focus in this set is on "entrepreneurial" activity, rather than specifically small or family-owned business and favours research articles over those that deal purely with practice.
