Content: New information and communication techniques have significant influences on urban life. In this book, international and interdisciplinary research, projects and considerations about the emerging 'Mediacity' are presented. Contributions from scientists, artists, and architects from 14 different countries are analyzing, researching and creatively approaching the cultural, social, political, and economical phenomena of the encounter between media and urban space. The Editor: Frank Eckardt is professor for 'Sociology of Globalization' at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. He holds a PhD in Political Science. His main field of research is urban studies. Planning for a Material World
Today, urban scholars think of cities and regions as evolving through networks of human associations, technologies, and natural ecologies. This being the case, planners are faced with the task of navigating a profoundly material world. Planning with and for humans alone is unacceptable: in the unfolding of urban processes, non-human things cannot be ignored. This inclusive vision has consequences for how planners envision the connections among norms, technologies and life-worlds as well as how they design and implement their plans. The contributors to this volume utilize a variety of examples – ecologically-sensitive, regional planning in Naples (Italy); congestion pricing in New York City; and public participation in Europe, among others – to explore how planners engage a heterogeneous and restless world. Inspired by assemblage thinking and actor-network theory, each chapter draws on this "new materialism" to acknowledge, in quite pragmatic ways, that spatial politics is a process of becoming that is inseparable from the materiality of urban practices.

Governance of Climate Responsive Cities
The book presents governance with a particular focus on the social and spatial aspects of climate responsiveness and reads the practice of governance across different scales. It conceptualizes a framework of scale composed of three main categories including (i) scientific knowledge, (ii) plans and policies, and (iii) authorities of action. This framework presents ‘practice’ as the social context in which these three can interplay adaptively. Within this framework, the book presents case studies from Turkey, Italy, Ecuador, Chile and the UK, that reach meaningful planning and design solutions at national, city, and neighbourhood scales in the face of climate change. Quality of Life in Urban Landscapes
This volume introduces an innovative tool for the development of sustainable cities and the promotion of the quality of life of city inhabitants. It presents a decision-support system to orient public administrations in identifying development scenarios for sustainable urban and territorial transformations. The authors have split the volume into five parts, which respectively describe the theoretical basis of the book, the policies in question and indicators that influence them, the decision-support system that connects indicators to policies, the case study of Ancona, Italy, and potential future directions for this work. Il fascicolo prende in esame l’uso della partecipazione, stile di lavoro che caratterizza le pratiche partecipative e deliberative, nei processi di pianificazione e di progettazione peculiari dell’urbanistica e accoglie saggi e ricerche con di vista diversificati e, talvolta, contrapposti nel campo delle pratiche territoriali interattive. La sezione Saggi accoglie contributi a carattere generale sul rapporto fra pianificazione e pratiche partecipative che accompagna la nascita stessa dell’urbanistica; la sezione Ricerche comprende contributi di approfondimento sul tema proposto relativi a casi concreti di esperienze effettuate in determinati territori italiani; la sezione dedicata all’Osservatorio Regionale ha come fulcro un primo bilancio sulle esperienze di partecipazione largamente promosse dalle istituzioni locali con esiti di varia natura.
