Religion, the Supernatural and Visual Culture in Early Modern Europe
This volume brings together some of the most exciting new scholarship on these themes, and thus pays tribute to the ground-breaking work of Charles Zika. Seventeen interdisciplinary essays offer new insights into the materiality and belief systems of early modern religious cultures as found in artworks, books, fragmentary texts and even in Protestant ‘relics’. Some contributions reassess communal and individual responses to cases of possession, others focus on witchcraft and manifestations of the disordered natural world. Saints, Miracles, and Social Problems in Italian Renaissance Art
In this book, Diana Bullen Presciutti explores how images of miracles performed by mendicant saints-reviving dead children, redeeming the unjustly convicted, mending broken marriages, quelling factional violence, exorcising the demonically possessed-actively shaped Renaissance Italians' perceptions of pressing social problems related to gender, sexuality, and honor. She argues that depictions of these miracles by artists-both famous (Donatello, Titian) and anonymous-played a critical role in defining and conceptualizing threats to family honor and social stability. Drawing from art history, history, religious studies, gender studies, and sociology, Presciutti's interdisciplinary study reveals how miracle scenes-whether painted, sculpted, or printed-operated as active agents of 'lived religion' and social negotiation in the spaces of the Renaissance Italian city.

The Tangle of Science
Science is remarkably reliable. It puts people on the moon, performs laser eye surgery, tells us about ancient civilizations and species, and predicts the future of our climate. What underwrites this reliability? This book argues that the standard answers--the scientific method, rigour, and objectivity--are insufficient for the job. Here we propose a new model of science which places its products front and centre. Questo volume si pone l’obiettivo di rimettere al centro dell’attenzione una riflessione di carattere politico sullo statuto dell’expertise nella società contemporanea. L’attuale dibattito all’interno degli studi sociali sulla scienza sembra essersi consolidato attorno a delle polarità oppositive apparentemente insormontabili: da un lato il post-modernismo relativista — risultato di un’estremizzazione del costruttivismo sociale — dall’altro il veritismo ingenuo — come adozione irriflessa delle posizioni (neo)positiviste. In questo contesto, la figura sociale dell’esperto si trova al centro del dibattito epistemologico e politico. Cosa significa essere esperti di qualcosa? Qual è la loro funzione sociale? Come avviene il processo di attribuzione della fiducia e sfiducia epistemologica? Quali forme di neutralità e non-neutralità dovremmo adottare nel valutare il prodotto di una riflessione esperta? Quali metodi e prospettive abbiamo per studiare l’expertise? Per i curatori del volume, è necessario aprire una tavola di discussione interdisciplinare su questi argomenti lanciando in Italia un dibatto che all’estero è invece già largamente prolifico.
Canguilhem and Continental Philosophy of Biology
This edited volume presents papers on this alternative philosophy of biology that could be called “continental philosophy of biology,” and the variety of positions and solutions that it has spawned. In doing so, it contributes to debates in the history and philosophy of science and the history of philosophy of science, as well as to the craving for ‘history’ and/or ‘theory’ in the theoretical biological disciplines. In addition, however, it also provides inspiration for a broader image of philosophy of biology, in which these traditional issues may have a place. The volume devotes specific attention to the work of Georges Canguilhem, which is central to this alternative tradition of “continental philosophy of biology”. This is the first collection on Georges Canguilhem and the Continental tradition in philosophy of biology. The book should be of interest to philosophers of biology, continental philosophers, historians of biology and those interested in broader traditions in philosophy of science.
