At present fishing for salmon in Norwegian home water is carried out with drift nets, bag nets, bend nets, lift nets and stake nets in the sea, and mainly by rods in the rivers. Catch statistics have been collected since 1876, but reliability of the statistics is questionable. The rates of exploitation on many Norwegian salmon stocks are very high, and data are presented and discussed for River Laerdal, River Eira and River Imsa stocks. Saltwater flyfishermen from all over northern Europe contribute information on methods, places and patterns for catching saltwater fish on the fly. Species covered include salmon, sea-trout, bass, pollack & coalfish, mullet, garfish, flatties and cod; and the area covered is from north Norway to southern Ireland. The contributors include Mike Ladle on bass and mullet, Stan Headley on Orkney sea-trout and many European experts from Norwegian cod to Baltic sea-trout. Included are extracts from the existing literature on saltwater flyfishing by John Bickerdyke, Fred Aflalo, Sidney Spencer, Stephen Johnson and others. Extensive bibliographies of sea-trout and of saltwater flyfishing are included. The first edition had a dark blue dust-wrapper. The book was reprinted in 2006 and 2012 with minor revisions (changed telephone numbers, website addresses, etc.) and was produced with a light blue dust-wrapper.
