The Work and Pensions Select Committee examines the policy, expenditure and administration of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and its associated agencies. This includes: Jobcentre Plus the Pension Service; the Child Support Agency and the Appeals Service as well as several associated independent statutory bodies. With an annual expenditure in excess of £100 billion, the DWP is the largest spending government department and employs about a quarter of the Civil Service. Amongst notable activitities of the Committee was the announcement of of an inquiry to examine the DWP's management of information technology (IT) projects. Inquiries were also held into the future role of the Social Security Advisory Committee; the future of UK pensions; employment for all; childcare for working parents and the European Social Fund. Issues relating to improving the Committee's scrutiny role were also of great concern.

Appointment of the chair of the Social Security Advisory Committee

The Committee conducted a pre-appointment hearing with the preferred candidate, Mr Deep Sagar, on 30 March 2011. (This was over a month later than expected due to the protracted selection process - the Committee remarks that the Department for Work and Pensions should ensure that timescales for selection for such posts should be realistic and deadlines met throughout.) The Committee endorses Mr Sagar's appointment, though has some concerns over his lack of direct experience in social security policy, which is a complex and technical subject area.
