David Lynch

For nearly 40 years, David Lynch's works have enthralled, mystified, and provoked viewers. Lynch's films delve into the subjective consciousness of his characters to reveal both the depraved darkness and luminous spirituality of human nature. From his experimental shorts of the 1960s to feature films like Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and INLAND EMPIRE, Lynch has pushed the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. In David Lynch: Beautiful Dark, author Greg Olson explores the surreal intricacies of the director's unique visual and visceral style not only in his full-length films but also his early forays into painting and short films, as well as his television lan...

Transformations Selected Works of G.B. Olson on Materials, Microstrucutre, and Design

ASM International and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) have collaborated to present a collection of the selected works of Dr. Greg B. Olson in honor of his 70th birthday in 2017. This collection highlights his influential contributions to the understanding of martensite transformations and the development and application of a systems design approach to materials. Part I: Martensite, with an Introduction by Sir Harry Bhadeshia, emphasizes Dr. Olson's work to develop a dislocation theory for martensite transformations, to improve the understanding of the statistical nature of martensite nucleation, and to expand use of quantitative microscopy to characterize phase transformations. Part II: Materials Design, with an Introduction by Dr. Charles Kuehmann, focuses on the application of a systems design approach to materials and the development of integrated computational design curriculum for undergraduate education. Part II includes several examples of the systems design approach to a variety of applications. The papers chosen for this collection were selected by the editors with input from Dr. Olson.

For centuries, the Ioway people lived on land that is now part of Missouri and Iowa. But settlers started moving into the area and wanted land for themselves. Great Walker, an Ioway leader, reluctantly agreed to sign a treaty giving up their traditional homeland. Many of the Ioway moved to an area set aside for them in Missouri, but Great Walker and his band refused to go along. They settled along the Chariton River and carried on with the customs and culture that had helped them survive for hundreds of years, even when it meant defending themselves against those new American settlers. This book is included in the non-fiction book series, "Notable Missourians", for young readers about people who contributed to Missouri's history or culture and who were born or lived in Missouri.

The Philosophy of David Lynch

From his cult classic television series Twin Peaks to his most recent film Inland Empire (2006), David Lynch is best known for his unorthodox narrative style. An award-winning director, producer, and writer, Lynch distorts and disrupts traditional storylines and offers viewers a surreal, often nightmarish perspective. His unique approach to filmmaking has made his work familiar to critics and audiences worldwide, and he earned Academy Award nominations for Best Director for The Elephant Man (1980), Blue Velvet (1986), and Mulholland Drive (2001). Lynch creates a new reality for both characters and audience by focusing on the individual and embracing existentialism. In The Philosophy of David...

Walker

You remember Wild, the somewhat spiritual memoir about the author’s amazing trek and heart-breaking backstory, right? This isn’t that. Although there is some wandering around that leads to recovery and redemption. And hiking did happen along the way. This could be A Million Little Pieces, but it’s not. This story is actually all true. Might even be Mommy Dearest, but thankfully, it’s not even close. For this story is told with heart and sensitivity. In fact, Walker is really about one woman’s spiritual journey to open her heart and develop compassion. Through it all, her own gumption would be her steady companion. The title of Walker evolved from a line in a poem: “There is no ro...

The bodies are found in towns and cities around Puget Sound. The young women who are the victims had nothing in common-except the agony of their final moments. And next victim will be the most shocking of all... Praise for Gregg Olsen's Novels: "Grabs you by the throat." -Kay Hooper. "Wickedly clever! Genuinely twisted." -Lisa Gardner.
