Since the 1990s, following the end of postmodernism, literary theory has lost much of its dynamics. This book aims at revitalising literary theory exploring two of its historical bases: German poetics and aesthetics. Musical Entanglements between Germany and East Asia
This edited volume explores musical encounters and entanglements between Germany and East Asian nations from 1900 to the present. In so doing, it speaks to their dynamic and multi-faceted musical relations in multiple ways. Despite East Asia and Germany being located at opposite ends of the globe, German music has found remarkably fertile soil in East Asia. East Asians have enthusiastically adopted it, while at the same time adding their own musical interpretations. These musical encounters have produced compositions that reflect this mutual influence, stimulating and enriching each other through their entanglement. Performative Figures of Queer Masculinity
This is a German history of cinema and film from the 1890s to 1945 with a focus on queer masculinity. Using media studies approaches, the study shows how film as a new medium is constituted through performative re-enactments of spectacular elements from the entertainment and knowledge cultures of the 19th century. Vienna Meets Berlin
The volume is based on papers given at the London Symposium 'Vienna Meets Berlin: Culture in the Metropolis Between the Wars' which took place at the Institute of Germanic Studies in December 2001. The book surveys the cultural links between Vienna and Berlin with a focus on the inter-war years and some post-1945 continuities. It includes a centenary tribute to Ödön von Horváth and contributions on theatre, film, journalism (the feuilleton in particular), literature, music and socio-political issues. Together, the studies can be read as a narrative of interaction between the two capital cities. The industrial and modern Berlin of the 1920s proves an irresistible magnet for many Viennese, whose letters and journalism time and again reflect on the differences between the cities. The year 1933 marks the political cut-off point, when in many cases exile becomes the predominant theme.
