Karin Sander [published on the Occasion of the Exhibition Held at the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, 27 April - 28 July 2002].
Testing and stretching the definition of conceptual art to its very limits, Karin Sander's site-specific installations blend into their respective contexts so completely that they often lurk on the border of perceptibility. Since 1985, Sander has been minimally intervening into the architecture of the museum and gallery setting, inserting wall pieces and fabric spaces, floor works, viewing boxes, and peepholes that challenge the viewer's role and explore the intersection between art and the public realm. One well-remembered intervention, installed in 1994 at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, found strategically placed circles of Astroturf in the lobby and sculpture garden, and painting-sized squares of wall throughout the building polished to a high-gloss.
Jeff Koons
Jeff Koons' newest paintings combine high pixelation of sexual imagery with gestural paint splashes, in an erotic rampage that bursts off the canvas, energized by a friction between photography, painting and digital media. In part an homage to Courbet's Origin of theWorld, these works argue for the flourishing of libido and aim to make a direct hit upon their viewer: My work will use everything that it can to communicate. It will use any trick, I'll do anything- absolutely anything-to communicate and to win the viewer over, says the artist. Offsetting this quasi-religious solicitousness is Koons' usual great degree of care in the layering of images, and the pixelated imagery that compels the viewer to stand back some way to process it. (For Koons, pixelation too is a sign of authenticity.) This beautifully produced edition presents five of these new paintings printed on tipped-in color plates.

The Centers for Austrian and Central European Studies, founded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Research play an important role for the Austrian and international scientific community since the 1970s. Their tasks are to promote studies on Austrian and Central Europe in their host nations as well as to offer Austrian and Central European students the opportunity to conduct research abroad and to get in touch with the local scientific community.
