What makes a person call a particular place ‘home’? Does it follow simply from being born there? Is it the result of a language shared with neighbours or attachment to a familiar landscape? Perhaps it is a piece of music, or a painting, or even a travelogue that captures the essence of home. And what about the sense of belonging that inspires nationalist or local autonomy movements? Each of these can be a marker of identity, but all are ambiguous. Where you were born has a different meaning if, like so many modern Germans, you have moved on and now live elsewhere. Representing the ‘national interest’ in parliament becomes more difficult when voters demand attention to local and regio...
This work provides an introduction to the visual arts in Germany from the early years of German unification to World War II. The study is an analysis of painting, sculpture, graphic art, design, film and photography in relation to a wider set of cultural and social issues that were specific to German modernism. It concentrates on the ways in which the production and reception of art interacted with and was affected by responses to unification, conflict between left and right political factions, gender concerns, contemporary philosophical and religious ideas, the growth of cities, and the increasing important of mass culture.
The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) presents the online supplement to the "NOVA" program "Kaboom!" The television program and the Web site provide information about fireworks, how pyrotechnics work, and the demolition of structures.
A history of the making of public culture in Imperial Germany, Provincial Modernity challenges traditional accounts of the rise and fall of German liberalism and the meaning given to the "cultural work" of the German middle classes. With an interdisciplinary approach that ranges from political history to modernist art and architecture, Jennifer Jenkins explores the role that local tradition, memory, history, culture, and environment played in nineteenth-century conceptions of citizenship and community in Hamburg. Eighteen black-and-white illustrations and one color illustration enhance her portrait of the city in question. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Jenkins focuses on the city's cul...
German curator Peter Friese has been intrigued by his country's ability to atone for some of the crimes of the Nazi era while other atrocities remain buried in the national subconcious. To explore the idea of the transformability of memory, Friese selected 12 diverse contemporary artists from various countries-each of whom had at some time produced art reflecting on the Holocaust-to elaborate on the role of art in exploring such layered and complex issues. Included are noted artists Christian Boltanski, General Idea, Shimon Attie and Jochen Gerz, among others, and eight in-depth essays. A thought-provoking exhibition catalog.
Art trains its sight on the natural sciences.
