Gustavo Adolfo Bécqeur is one of the finest writers in any language of tales about fantastic and supernatural occurrences and delirious and delusional states of mind. The fourteen legends, translated from Spanish to English in this volume, show Bécquer at the peak of his ability to render environments in which the human spirit expands its emotional desires in ways that can be as uplifting as they are destructive. Bécquer provides unforgettable characters placed in situations that constantly remind readers that we are never more alive than when we are on the verge of losing that which we hold most dear, be it people we love, dreams we have, or ultimately our very lives. In the Legends readers will find a preference for imaginative subject matter, an appreciation for nature and its link to human emotions, and a dwelling on individualistic and intimate thoughts and feelings. Intensifying all is the sense that Bécquer manifests a deep empathy for his characters regardless of their foibles.
Gustavo Adolfo Domnguez Bastida, better known as Gustavo Adolfo Becquer (Seville, February 17, 1836 - Madrid, 22 December 1870), was a Spanish poet and writer.
Gustavo Adolfo Becquer was one of Spain's most important poets of the 19th century, and the instigator of a new Spanish version of Romanticism, influenced by German models such as Heine. Born in Seville in 1836, the son of an artist of Flemish origin, he lived only 34 years, but in that time created a hugely influential body of verse (his Rimas, or Rhymes) as well as several short fictions (the Leyendas, or Legends). His other works include a remarkable series of letters, or epistolary fictions, published as Desde mi celda (From My Cell). Orphaned at the age of five, Becquer was raised by an elderly, and childless, uncle. A talented artist himself - as was also his brother, Valeriano - he be...
The late Romantic poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer is considered one of the first modern Spanish poets. His ‘Rimas’ (Rhymes) are celebrated for their sensitive, restrained and deeply subjective quality. Bécquer’s poetry tackles themes of love, disillusionment and loneliness, while exploring the mysteries of life and poetry. In contrast to the rhetorical and dramatic style of the Romantic period, Bécquer’s lyricism, in which assonance predominates, is simple and airy. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of literature’s finest poets, with superior formatting. This volume presents Bécquer’s collected works, with related illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. ...
In preparing this collection of Becquer's legends, tales, and short poems, which is the only annotated edition of this author's works that has been published as yet for English-speaking students, the editor has aimed to give to our schools and colleges a book that may serve, not only as a reader for first or second year classes, but also as an introduction to Spanish literature, through the works of one of the most original and charming authors of the Spanish Romantic school.Fondness for good literature should be stimulated from the very first, and the quaint tales and legends of old Spain contained in this edition, told, as they are, in a most fascinating style, are well adapted to captivat...
