The Economic Consequences of Immigration to Germany
This volume discusses some economic aspects of immigration with special refer ence to the case of Germany. Immigration has become a major issue in Germany. Germany still does not have an official immigration policy in spite of the fact that more than 8 percent of the residents are non-citizens and that Germany · s immigration figures almost have reached the US figures. The foreign Iabor supply strongly influences the German Iabor market. The bulk of foreign workers is employed in certain industries. In some industries (mining, steel) 20 and more percent of the employees are foreign workers. Most foreign workers are blue collar workers with low wages. The Iabor demand for immigrants has declined in the last 15 years while the foreign population and Iabor supply has increased. As a consequence, foreigners experience higher unemployment rates than Germans. The fall of the Berlin wall and the collapse of the communist regimes in East Europe further increased the blue collar Iabor supply and strengthened the competition for foreign workers on the German Iabor market.

The recent experience of industrialized countries with low fer tility and persistent immigration has stimulated interest in the eco nomic effects of population change in industrial countries and has led to new research in population economics. In Germany, however, where these demographic trends were perhaps most pronounced, research on po pulation economics has lagged. During recent years more German econo mists have also turned to this topic. Probleme und Chancen demographischer Entwicklung in der Dritten Welt
Auf der Welt leben gegenwärtig mehr als 5 Milliarden Menschen, davon ungefähr 3,8 Milliarden in den Entwicklungsländern. Besonders in den Ländern der Dritten Welt ist die Bevölkerung nach dem 2. Weltkrieg rasch gewachsen. Welche Probleme ergeben sich aus dieser Bevölkerungsentwicklung? Dieser Frage wird in dem Konferenzband der Jahrestagung 1988 der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Bevölkerungswissenschaft nachgegangen. Diskutiert werden Trends und Konsequenzen des Bevölkerungswachstums, soziokulturelle Probleme in der Dritten Welt und die Probleme der Ernährung und der Familienplanung in der Dritten Welt. Der Band richtet sich sowohl an Wissenschaftler als auch an Entwicklungspolitiker. Er gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über die möglichen Folgewirkungen der demographischen Entwicklung und zeichnet ein optimistischeres Bild des Bevölkerungsproblems als die meisten Publikationen in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten.
