Hormonal treatment of malignant diseases has been used for quite some years now, and progress in this field is still being made at a steady pace. The detection of new endocrine feed back loops and the availability of new classes of hormonal agents made hormonal intervention with predictable outcome possible. Besides the intellectual challenge of modulating the hormone system, an important aspect of recent research on hormones and cancer is the reduction of treatment-related morbidity achieved with the new hormonal strategies. Thus, controlled intervention in the hypothalamic-gonadotropic axis is increasingly apt to replace surgical removal of the relevant glands, i. e. , the pituitary gland ...
The Third International Copenhagen Symposium on Detection of Breast Cancer afforded a further opportunity for scientists from all over the world to come together and present important papers con cerning breast cancer and early diagnostic procedures. The Sympo sium was an opportunity to learn from extensive screening proce dures carried out at outstanding centers in the United States, Sweden, the Netherlands, and England. Furthermore, the Sympo sium dealt with new modalities such as ultrasonography, magnifi cation techniques, and magnetic resonance; and very important contributions concerning self-examination, fine needle aspiration biopsy, and radiation risks were presented. A whole section ...
Among the standard oncology modalities, surgical oncology is singular in that it lacks a separate board certification or even an added qualification mecha nism. 'Card-carrying' surgical oncologists are certified by the American Board of Surgery, as are all other general surgeons. What distinguishes the surgical oncologist is a set of cognitive skills rather than a specific armamentarium of surgical techniques. This different conceptual framework is derived from ex tensive additional training that leads to an in-depth understanding of the natural history and biologic behavior of the various solid tumor systems. Equipped with this perspective, the surgical oncologist is particularly well posit...
The Lloyd’s Register of Yachts was first issued in 1878, and was issued annually until 1980, except during the years 1916-18 and 1940-46. Two supplements containing additions and corrections were also issued annually. The Register contains the names, details and characters of Yachts classed by the Society, together with the particulars of other Yachts which are considered to be of interest, illustrates plates of the Flags of Yacht and Sailing Clubs, together with a List of Club Officers, an illustrated List of the Distinguishing Flags of Yachtsmen, a List of the Names and Addresses of Yacht Owners, and much other information. Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II, Nine Volume Set reviews and examines topics of relevance to today’s inorganic chemists. Covering more interdisciplinary and high impact areas, Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II includes biological inorganic chemistry, solid state chemistry, materials chemistry, and nanoscience. The work is designed to follow on, with a different viewpoint and format, from our 1973 work, Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry, edited by Bailar, Emeléus, Nyholm, and Trotman-Dickenson, which has received over 2,000 citations. The new work will also complement other recent Elsevier works in this area, Comprehensive Coordination Chemistry and Comprehensive Organometallic Che...
More than 180 participants and experts from 31 countries met for the fifth time in 10 years in St. Gallen, Switzerland for a 3-day conference to discuss important current issues of clinical cancer prevention. The meeting was again organized and co-sponsored by St. Gallen Oncology Conferences (SONK). While SONK has been extremely successful in organizing large international c- gresses on “Primary Therapy of Early Breast Cancer” as well as “Supportive Care in Cancer” for more than 20 years, the idea of promoting interdisciplinary, clinically oriented meetings on cancer prevention is a more recent and not yet generally accepted and w- comed concept in modern oncology. Since today’s me...
