The genetics science is less than 150 years old, but its accomplishments have been astonishing. Genetics has become an indispensable component of almost all research in modern biology and medicine. Human genetic variation is associated with many, if not all, human diseases and disabilities. Nowadays, studies investigating any biological process, from the molecular level to the population level, use the "genetic approach" to gain understanding of that process. This book contains many diverse chapters, dealing with human genetic diseases, methods to diagnose them, novel approaches to treat them and molecular approaches and concepts to understand them. Although this book does not give a comprehensive overview of human genetic diseases, I believe that the sixteen book chapters will be a valuable resource for researchers and students in different life and medical sciences.
An encyclopedia of methods in biochemical analysis, this modern series keeps biochemists and analytical chemists abreast of experimental innovations and improvements in biochemical techniques and instrumentation.
In this book, the self-healing of composite structures with shape memory polymer as either matrix or embedded suture is systematically discussed. Self-healing has been well known in biological systems for many years: a typical example is the self-healing of human skin. Whilst a minor wound can be self-closed by blood clotting, a deep and wide cut needs external help by suturing. Inspired by this observation, this book proposes a two-step close-then-heal (CTH) scheme for healing wide-opened cracks in composite structures–by constrained shape recovery first, followed by molecular healing. It is demonstrated that the CTH scheme can heal wide-opened structural cracks repeatedly, efficiently, t...

The incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing, and this pathological condition is strongly associated with some serious adverse pregnancy outcomes and important miscellaneous long-term complications. Therefore, it is important that GDM is timely recognized and adequately managed. Although much knowledge has been acquired regarding the prevention, diagnosis, implications, and management of GDM, the exact mechanisms of its genesis are still under investigation. This book provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in gestational diabetes mellitus. It includes three major sections directing the reader’s attention to the etiology, management, and consequences of the disorder.
Contemporary Sleep Medicine should be of interest to a large number of readers interested in sleep medicine. It is divided into two parts - one for patients or simple readers and another for physicians or advanced readers. The Ebook explores new research
