Grundlagen der Analysis

Grundlagen der Analysis

Landau's classic book on the foundations of analysis is presented in its original German, with a German-English dictionary as an appendix. One intent of this edition is to provide the English-speaking mathematician with an opportunity to learn some mathematical German. Of course, a pleasant by-product is having Landau's exposition on the construction of the real numbers from the natural numbers using Dedekind cuts. The book is written in an extremely telegraphic style, with few words outside the 'Theorem-Proof' motif, making the German notably simpler than in more advanced texts. Thus, the student who begins this book with little or no knowledge of German will gain the experience of successfully reading an entire book in mathematics and with it a feeling for the language and a well-ingrained mathematical vocabulary. The English edition of the book is available as Foundations of Analysis.

The traditional purpose of the Adriatic Meeting is to present most advanced scienti?c research conducted by the lecturers who take part in the development of their ?elds and, in addition, to provide a school-like atmosphere for young scientists. Dubrovnik, as a geographical centre of this region of Europe, provided a most adequate location for this conference. Having very agreeable surroundings, the conference site nevertheless gave a focus for very strong scienti?c interaction. The subjects chosen for the 8th meeting, in September 2001, were gauge theories, particle phenomenology, string theories and cosmology. We were able to bring together a very good cross section of outstanding scientis...

Lattice Gauge Theory

This volume presents the contributions to the international workshop entitled "Lattice Gauge Theory - a Challenge in Large Scale Computing" that was held in Wuppertal from November 4 to 7, 1985. This meeting was the third in a series of European workshops in this rapidly developing field. The meeting intended to bring together both active university research ers in this field and scientists from industry and research centers who pursue large scale computing projects on problems within lattice gauge theory. These problems are extremely demanding from the point of view of both machine hardware and algorithms, for the verification of the continuum fields theories like Quantum Chromodynamics in ...

Strong and Electroweak Matter 2000

This book contains articles by experts on the plasma phase of quantum chromodynamics, and the plasma phase of electroweak interactions. The former plasma phase is being tested at RHIC (Brookhaven), and has been tested at CERN. Both plasmas have played roles in the development of the Universe since the Big Bang. A third topic is that of the high density colour superconductive state of matter, which may be present in the core of neutron stars. Contents: Color Superconductivity in Compact Stars (M Alford et al.); Aspects of Parity, CP and Time Reversal Violation in Hot QCD (D Kharzeev et al.); Electroweak Phase Transition Beyond the Standard Model (M Laine); Aspects of Semi-Classical Transport ...

The QCD Vacuum, Hadrons and Superdense Matter

This invaluable book is an extensive set of lecture notes on various aspects of non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics ? the fundamental theory of strong interaction on which nuclear and hadronic physics is based. The original edition of the book, written in the mid-1980's, had more of a review style. In the second edition the outline remains the same, but the text has been completely rewritten, and extended. Apart from the new developments over the years, this edition has benefited from several graduate courses which the author has taught at Stony Brook during the last decade. The text is now complemented by exercises and has a total of about 1000 references to major works, arranged by subj...

Selected Topics in Nonperturbative QCD

The book addresses aspects of QCD which are related to its underlying structure as a field theory and to its mechanisms. Perturbative expansions do not work at large distances for QCD: the hadron spectrum, the confinement of colour, its deconfinement at high temperatures and the breaking of chiral symmetry all need nonperturbative methods of analysis. Sum rules, chiral perturbation theory and the formulation of QCD on a lattice are some of the tools used to test models, like the stochastic vacuum, the instanton liquid or the consideration of monopoles in the vacuum to produce dual superconductivity and confinement. The work covers different points of view and critical comparison between the different approaches. It can be considered a good reference text.

The QCD Vacuum, Hadrons and the Superdense Matter

This is probably the only textbook available that gathers QCD, many-body theory and phase transitions in one volume. The presentation is pedagogical and readable. It provides materials interesting to both students and researchers of astrophysics, nuclear physics and high energy physics.

This book shows how the study of multi-hadron production phenomena in the years after the founding of CERN culminated in Hagedorn's pioneering idea of limiting temperature, leading on to the discovery of the quark-gluon plasma -- announced, in February 2000 at CERN. Following the foreword by Herwig Schopper -- the Director General (1981-1988) of CERN at the key historical juncture -- the first part is a tribute to Rolf Hagedorn (1919-2003) and includes contributions by contemporary friends and colleagues, and those who were most touched by Hagedorn: Tamás Biró, Igor Dremin, Torleif Ericson, Marek Gaździcki, Mark Gorenstein, Hans Gutbrod, Maurice Jacob, István Montvay, Berndt Müller, Gra...

Proceedings of the Sixth International Workshop on Relativistic Aspects of Nuclear Physics

This volume deals mainly with physics related to the RHIC. It contains one of the first reports on the results of RHIC experiments.
