Denitrification in the Nitrogen Cycle

This book contains the papers presented at a Nato Advanced Re search Workshop entitled "DENITRIFICATION IN THE N-CYCLE," held in Braunschweig (W-Germany) from 24 to 27 Mai 1983. All expenses were provided by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The scientific programme was in the first instance planned by some members of the Eco-Science Panel under the stimulating organization of Dr. Oscar Ravera and the final programme was prepared in co-operation between Ravera and myself. However, even during the meeting important con tributions were added. The meeting was hosted by the Microbiologi cal Dept. of F.A.L., which also took care of the organizatory as pects. Nitrate is constantly lost from ...

Eutrophication of Deep Lakes focuses on research and experiments that are deemed valuable to mitigate the eutrophication of lakes. Containing the contributions of authors who have continuously conducted studies in this field, the book proceeds by pointing out how the loading concept can serve as a basis in the control of eutrophication. This discussion is seconded by discussions on the factors affecting the eutrophication of freshwaters in Norway. Particularly given attention in this book is the phosphorous content of small and large lakes. The relationship of pollution and eutrophication is also noted. The large inputs of nutrients into lakes is emphasized, and then the application of the U...

Advances in Soil Science

Advances in Soil Science

The study of soils today has taken on increased importance because a rapidly expanding population is placing demands on the soil never before experienced. This has led to an increase in land degradation. Land degradation is one of the most severe problems facing mankind. Volume 11 of Advances in Soil Science was devoted entirely to this critical area of soil science. From the beginning of agriculture until about 1950, increased food production came almost entirely from expanding the cropland base. Since 1950, however, the yield per unit of land area for major crops has increased dramatically. Much of the increase in yields was because of increased inputs of energy. Between 1950 and 1985, the...

Oceans, Rivers and Lakes: Energy and Substance Transfers at Interfaces

An international symposium on `Ocean, River and Lakes: Energy and Substance Transfers at Interfaces' was held in Nantes, France in October 1996. It was the third International Joint Conference on Limnology and Oceanography which brings together specialists of both environments. Considered to be necessary in Europe, this confrontation of two different aspects of common subjects could produce innovative approaches. The main purpose concerns scientific researches relative to the interfaces between various aquatic environment compartments. The principal treated topics are bioavailability and mobility of substances, influence of biotic and abiotic factors on transfers, and fluxes at the interfaces. It is particularly interesting to note the contribution of Limnologists and Oceanographers on the impact of nutrients and pollutants, and flux quantification of river basin inputs. As well as scientists, this book is also of interest to all engineers and consultants involved in teaching and working in aquatic management, restoration and enhancement.

Trophic Relationships in Inland Waters

The International Symposium on Trophic Relationships in Inland Waters, held from 1st-4th September 1987, at the Balaton Limnological Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Tihany (Hungary), was intended to give an insight into current research on limnology of inland waters. The meeting was organized on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Institute in order to promote the exchange of ideas and discussion of new results. Papers presented during the Symposium dealt with four main topics: (1) Interactions of inorganic nutrients, primary producers and bacteria, (2) Interactions between primary and secondary producers, (3) Trophic relationships between plankton and fish, ...

The Chemistry of Phosphate and Nitrogen Compounds in Sediments

This book deals with the processes behind cycles of the phosphate and nitrogen compounds in sediment and the phosphate equilibria between the sediment and the overlying water. In most waters, excessive concentrations of these compounds causes eutrophication: rapid, choking growth of algae. The chapters of this book probe the chemicals involved in considerable detail, and offer the complete understanding needed to remediate or prevent pollution problems.
