Hannah Hodgson is a seriously ill poet, deploying the surreal and the medical to chart institutional truths vs the individual. 163 days is the length of her longest hospitalisation. Here we join her. At turns funny and hopeful, frightening and moving, this collection is an unusual look at impending mortality and the body/mind as separate selves.

'The Estate Agent's Daughter' is Rhian Edwards' eagerly awaited follow-up to her multi-prizewinning debut 'Clueless Dogs'. Her voice is both powerfully personal, local to her Bridgend birthplace, and performative, born to be read aloud. In the title poem, the protagonist has become a surrealist house, with dream-like details 'carpeted with sycamore seeds and cherry blossom throughout'; the sturdy realism of a writing desk 'nudged/ to the brink of the bay', as well as points of sharp irony: 'all mod cons'. This poem foreshadows both the heartbreak (a shattered first marriage) and joy (the birth of a daughter), that feature in the work that follows. We also have pieces of sly irony, of disillusioned dating. There is an engaging diptych devoted to a recently deceased grandmother and grandfather, who died within months of each other, whose vivid personalities with all their tragi-comic elements, shine through. The author combines her visceral skill for description, for these are poems based in the body, with a feminist forthright courage to speak of difficult things.

This is a book filled with blood, but also with air and light, a book of hard-won knowledge, a book that is both pragmatic and tender, about listening and being listened to, and the types of care we give and receive." – Kim MooreIlse Pedler is a prize-winning poet who writes from the unique perspective of a practicing veterinary surgeon. Her title, Auscultation means listening and specifically, in medicine, listening to sounds that come from the body's internal organs. remember / tidal volume is estimated based on // what's left in the lung as it closes / remember love is based on tides / as they come in closer As the COVID-19 pandemic erupted, Jamie was warned by the doctor that due to their underlying health they would not be a priority for critical care treatment. Using the compressed form of a sonnet, they kept rewriting and re-experiencing different voices and identities to explore what it means to face one's mortality so directly, suddenly, and unexpectedly. This work became a pamphlet, Shield, following Jamie through the grief of facing death while newly married, and into a place of resilience, resistance, and a commitment to creation against mortality. i'd rather die / as i've lived as i've lived filled with love and / i'd rather die fierce as myself 'These are arresting, heart-stopping poems lit with a rare intensity. Hale's poems don't pull any punches, they explore what it is to live in a body and on the way touch the centre of the fragility deep inside all of us. Humane poems that will make you ache.' - Mona Arshi
