This reference text establishes linkages between the user industries and the providers of clean technologies and sustainable materials for a rapid transformation of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The text covers several aspects of sustainable applications including clean technologies, climate change and its effects, sustainable buildings (smart cities), sustainability in road construction, sustainable use of geosynthetic, innovative materials, and sustainable construction practices. The text will be useful for senior undergraduate students, graduate students, and researchers in the fields of civil engineering and other infrastructure-related professionals and planners. The bo...
The image and worth of an organization are mirrored in its performance, it is said. This judgement is more relevant, when it comes to organizations, whose mandate is to provide public services. Hence, in order to achieve higher levels of efficiency and greater effectiveness in operations, many organizations have systems in place to measure their own performance that help in strategic decision-making and long-range planning.Performance measurement is almost an inevitable option for urban local bodies today, considering that they have to provide a wide array of public services and deal with large amount of resources, besides the ever-increasing pressure on them to improve quality and approach....
The Cleaner is Cheaper series, now in it's fifth year, server as an authoritative commentary on the outstanding innovations being undertaken by Indian industry for effective environmental management. The title was released by the Hon'ble Finance Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram during the 6th TERI Corporate Awards on 23 May '07.The examples documented in this book present the 'first-evers' in the industry and hence should server as motivation for the others to benefit from the experiences and improve upon. A common characteristic of water demand in urban areas worldwide is its inexorable rise over many years; continued growth is projected over coming decades. The chief influencing factors are population growth and migration, together with changes in lifestyle, demographic structure and the possible effects of climate change (the detailed implications of climate change are not yet clear, and anyway will depend on global location, but must at least increase the uncertainty in security of supply). This is compounded by rapid development, creeping urbanization and, in some places, rising standards of living. Meeting this increasing demand from existing resources is self-evidently an uphill struggl...
This book comprises select proceedings of the International Conference on Sustainable Civil Engineering Practices (ICSCEP 2019). It covers several important aspects of sustainable civil engineering practices dealing with effective waste and material management, natural resources, industrial products, energy, food, transportation and shelter, while conserving and protecting the environmental quality and the natural resource base essential for future development. The book also discusses engineering solutions to sustainable development and green design issues. Special emphasis is given on qualitative guidelines for generation, treatment, handling, transport, disposal and recycling of wastes. The book is intended as a practice-oriented reference guide for researchers and practitioners, and will be useful for all working in sustainable civil engineering related fields.

The papers in this volume provide a balanced account of developments in soil organic matter research. It focuses on composition and structure, water quality, organic matter turnover, humus quality and fertility, and is essential reading for all those concerned with the environmental aspects of soil conservation and improvement.
Despite India’s record of rapid economic growth and poverty reduction over recent decades, rising inequality in the country has been a subject of concern among policy makers, academics, and activists alike. Poverty and Social Exclusion in India focuses on social exclusion, which has its roots in India’s historical divisions along lines of caste, tribe, and the excluded sex, that is, women. These inequalities are more structural in nature and have kept entire groups trapped, unable to take advantage of opportunities that economic growth offers. Culturally rooted systems perpetuate inequality, and, rather than a culture of poverty that afflicts disadvantaged groups, it is, in fact, these inequality traps that prevent these groups from breaking out. Combining rigorous quantitative research with a discussion of these underlying processes, this book finds that exclusion can be explained by inequality in opportunities, inequality in access to markets, and inequality in voice and agency. This report will be of interest to policy makers, development practitioners, social scientists, and academics working to foster equality in India.
