This revised edition provides the basics of applying hazard and operability study (Hazop) and hazard analysis (Hazan). Hazop is a creative but systematic method of identifying hazards in process plants. Hazard analysis is then used to quantify the risks from these hazards, and to assess how far to go in reducing them. This book is presented in easy-to-read style and explains: what a Hazop is, who carries it out, when, and how long it should take; points to watch during a Hazop; an example of a Hazop; Hazops on flowsheets; the stages of Hazard analysis; the Fatal Accident Rate; risks to the public; estimating how often an accident will occur, with examples; and pitfalls in Hazan.

Negotiating with the Devil

After many years in the little-known world of back- channel mediation, helping sworn adversaries to prevent, manage or resolve conflict, Pierre Hazan felt compelled to re-examine the acute practical and ethical dilemmas that affected his work in Bosnia, Ukraine, the Sahel and the Central African Republic. What is the mediator’s responsibility when two belligerents conclude a peace agreement to the detriment of a third? Should mediators never be party to ‘ethnic cleansing’, even if it saves lives? Old Age

Haim Hazan is a leading specialist on old age in anthropology, and has published several books on particular communities of old people. The latest book is an essay on the realities of old age, as it is experienced, as opposed to the ideas about the old current in western societies. It argues that the construction of this world by outsiders is inevitably affected by deeply ingrained social attitudes and structures, such as the spatial segregation of the aged as a population, and the fear of death with which they are associated. By approaching the subject from the social constructionist perspective, and by drawing on a variety of detailed ethnographic accounts, the author describes a unique and nuanced social world. This is a sophisticated and original book, which should have a significant impact on a field still dominated by a 'social problems' approach.
