Process and Operation Planning

Process planning detennines how a product is to be manufactured and is therefore a key element in the manufacturing process. It plays a major part in detennining the cost of components and affects all factory activities, company competitiveness, production planning, production efficiency and product quality. It is a crucial link between design and manufacturing. In spite of the importance of process planning in the manufacturing cycle, there is no fonnal methodology which can be used, or can help to train personnel for this job. Process planning activities are predominantly labor intensive, depending on the experience and the skill and intuition of the planner, and therefore often precludes ...

Facilities for Cancer Services

This document gives best practice advice on the design and layout of cancer facilities within acute hospitals, primarily chemotherapy and radiotherapy facilities. Although it is aimed at new builds, the recommendations should be applied, where possible, when existing facilities are being upgraded. It describes a chemotherapy unit for the delivery of intravenous and intrathecal chemotherapy, and a radiotherapy unit for the delivery of external beam radiotherapy (teletherapy), as well as facilities for undertaking unsealed source radiotherapy and sealed source radiotherapy (brachytherapy). It also describes a dedicated out-patients unit (OPU) for cancer patients, although it is acknowledged that some trusts will use a shared out-patients facility. Reference is made to facilities that are not used exclusively by people with cancer but have a particular relevance.

Principles of Process Planning

Process planning determines how a product is to be manufactured and is therefore a key element in the manufacturing process. It plays a major part in determining the cost of components and affects all factory activities, company competitiveness, production planning, production efficiency and product quality. It is a crucial link between design and manufacturing. There are several levels of process planning activities. Early in product engineering and development, process planning is responsible for determining the general method of production. The selected general method of production affects the design constraints. In the last stages of design, the designer has to consider ease of manufactu...

Perspectives in Running Water Ecology

The discipline of stream ecology has grown exponentially along with most other areas of science in the last three decades. The field has changed from a fish management-dominated poor-sister of limnology to a discipline with theoretical constructs and ecological insights as rich as those in any area of ecology. A focus on energy transformations, nutrient turnover and the storage and processing of organic substrates has greatly enhanced the development of current paradigms. For example, the data base on microbial-biochemical invertebrate interactions in streams is now very extensive. A survey of the stream ecology literature reveals the central role played by H.B. Noel Hynes, whom I believe to...

Sterile Services Department

Provides guidance to help health planners, estates and facilities managers, sterile services managers and capital planning and design teams to plan and design a sterile services department. It discusses the objectives of a sterile services department (SSD) and service requirements, particularly focusing on: raising standards in decontamination services by optimising the built environment: service requirements strategy: calculating the optimum capacity of an SSD to eradicate bottlenecks: determining the most appropriate location of an SSD. Design guidance based on the above service objectives is outlined. Finally, the finer details of the individual spaces within an SSD are discussed.
