Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms Underlying the Pathogenesis of Hepatic Fibrosis
Worldwide, liver fibrosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality and is associated with a high medical and economic burden. It is the common consequence of chronic liver injury due to various etiologies. During fibrogenesis, there is a progressive substitution of the liver parenchyma by scar tissue. Recent advances in the understanding of the history of liver fibrosis have shown that the pathogenesis is driven by different cell types and a large variety of soluble mediators. At present, scientists working in this field aim to increase basic knowledge, improve diagnostics, and try to translate experimental findings into new treatment modalities. This book includes 12 selected contributions from the Special Issue “Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms Underlying the Pathogenesis of Hepatic Fibrosis” that was published in Cells. These articles summarize current perspectives and findings in hepatic fibrosis research showing how scientists try to use basic scientific research to create new therapies and diagnostics.

For the exhibition BAU [ SPIEL ] HAUS, Neues Museum in Nuremberg, supported by the Bauhaus Today Fund of the German Federal Cultural Foundation, has issued an ambitious, three-part publication to mark the 100thanniversary of the Bauhaus school of design ? a catalog, a reader and an artist?s book. The concept for the project was produced by artist Olaf Nicolai, who, together with design studio Daily Dialogue (Maximilian Schachtner, Malin Schoenberg, Marie Damageux), was also responsible for the design. 00The catalog documents the exhibition curated by Thomas Hensel and Robert Eikmeyer, with its focus on the subject of play ? as a fundamental element of the creative process ? with more than 100 works from over 100 years. One particular highlight is the presentation by American artist Liam Gillick. Biology and Ecology of Antarctic Krill
This book gives a unique insight into the current knowledge of krill population dynamics including distribution, biomass, production, recruitment, growth and mortality rates. Detailed analysis is provided on food and feeding, reproduction and krill behaviour. The volume provides an overview on the aspects of natural challenges to the species, which involve predation, parasites and the commercial exploitation of the resource and its management. A chapter on genetics shows the results of population subdivision and summarizes recent work on sequencing transcriptomes for studying gene function as part of the physiology of live krill. The focus of Chapter 4 is on physiological functions such as biochemical composition, metabolic activity and growth change with ontogeny and season; and will demonstrate which environmental factors are the main drivers for variability. Further discussed in this chapter are the bottle necks which occur in the annual life cycle of krill, and the mechanisms krill have adapted to cope with severe environmental condition.
