Goodbye Russia

The moving story of Rachmaninoff's years in exile and the composition of his last great work, set against a cataclysmic backdrop of two world wars and personal tragedy. In 1940, Sergei Rachmaninoff, living in exile in America, broke his creative silence and composed a swan song to his Russian homeland—his iconic “Symphonic Dances.” What happened in those final haunted years and how did he come to write his farewell masterpiece? Rachmaninoff left Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) in 1917 during the throes of the Russian Revolution. He was forty-four years old, at the peak of his powers as composer-conductor-performer, moving in elite Tsarist circles, as well as running the family estate, h...

For the Middle Ages and Renaissance, meaning and power were created and propagated through public performance. Processions, coronations, speeches, trials, and executions are all types of public performance that were both acts and texts: acts that originated in the texts that gave them their ideological grounding; texts that bring to us today a trace of their actual performance. Literature, as well, was for the pre-modern public a type of performance: throughout the medieval and early modern periods we see a constant tension and negotiation between the oral/aural delivery of the literary work and the eventual silent/read reception of its written text. The current volume of essays examines the...

The present volume highlights the new challenges of the international protection of refugees fifty years after the adoption of the 1951 Geneva Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. Focusing on the problems faced by Switzerland in the field of international protection of refugees as well as on the specificity of its asylum law and practice, this publication addresses the refugee problem from a national, European and international perspective. The Swiss experience serves to illustrate the wider problematic of on the one hand, the tensions between security, political and humanitarian concerns encountered by refugee-receiving states, and on the other, the need to preserve an internation...

Chapel Bridge Gable Painting

„The gable paintings of the world-famous Chapel Bridge in Lucerne are a highly interesting “open” history book. They comprise important events of the history of Lucerne and Switzerland. During the night of August 17, 1993, a devastating fire almost completely destroyed the Chapel Bridge, one of Switzerland’s most famous landmarks and symbol of the city of Lucerne. Of the 111 paintings, which at the time used to adorn the gables of the 14th century wooden bridge, the fire destroyed 86. Among the 76 paintings of the most important series, which is about the history of Lucerne and the Swiss Confederation, three quarters were either severely or completely destroyed. The 76 panels about the first cycle, “Lucerne and the emergent Confederation,” from the replica series by Dr. Jost Schumacher, are displayed in this audio guide. „An interesting feature of the new publications of audio guides is the 24 reproduced photographs of the original paintings, taken shortly before the devastating fire in 1993.“
