Casanova and Hernandez
Spanish (Rotterdam based) architects Helena Casanova and Jesus Hernandez have developed a strong pictorial strategy for their exhibition in the Architektur Galerie Berlin (17.05. - 29.06.2013). The book Scale & Perception with the same title as the exhibition serves to provide greater insight to Casanova + Hernandez' central theme of architecture, based on photographs by Christian Richters. They show, from his point of view, the many overlapping layers which define the visual perception of the buildings. They are accompanied by numerous plans and sketches showing the role of every single layer in the creation of the overall perception.The book is completed by the manifesto-like text "Scale & Perception: Rethinking Phenomenological Architecture in the Global Age" by Casanova + Hernandez.
Public Space and an Interdisciplinary Approach to Design
The crisis of contemporary public space is a question of interest to all architects. The economic, social and cultural crisis, in particular affecting the entire European continent, is clearly and originally reflected in the public spaces of our cities, more and more of which are now considered “heritage”. Public space and the public realm, due to their original facets, are once again a theme of interest for architects, but also for philosophers, sociologist and anthropologists (J. Habermas, D. Innerarity, Z. Bauman, M. Augé), as complex “spaces” to be decomposed. Hence, a few questions: Does the analysis of public space and an approach to design, in a reality that considers a different concept of “public” than that of the pat century comport a new way of looking? A new urban-architectural nomenclature? An interdisciplinary approach to design? The general situation described in this publication, in various authors from different disciplinary backgrounds, clearly expresses the tangible need to provide (or provide once again) positive responses to different questions before proceeding with the design – or analysis – of contemporary public space.

Casanova's Life and Times
This is both the life of Giacomo Casanova and a chronicle of eighteenth-century Europe. Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798) was born the son of a moderately poor acting family at a time when the stage carried enormous social stigma. Yet in his own lifetime he achieved celebrity across Europe, rubbing shoulders with numerous of the eighteenth century's greatest men and women, from Frederick the Great to Catherine the Great, from Voltaire to Albrecht von Haller, from Pope Benedict XIV to Pope Clement XIII. It was a fame that had little to do with his romantic exploits. This was to come later, following upon the posthumous publication of his magnificent History of My Life. An adventurer and a man of learning, his was an extraordinary life whose story was intertwined with the story of eighteenth-century Europe. To try to understand this fascinating character we need also to try to understand the period in which he lived. This is the aim of Casanova's Life and Times.
