This book highlights recent developments in the radical right providing comparative analysis of current extremist activity in Eastern and Western Europe and the United States. It reveals the growing amount of connections and continuities of rightwing movements and ideologies across national borders. Subjects covered include: Who joins radical right parties and why? Recent developments in parties in Eastern & Western Europe The transatlantic cross-fertilisation of ideological perspectives How the US extreme-right has changed since the emergence of the Tea Party movement This will be essential reading for all students and scholars within an interest in the contemporary radical right and extremism.
The present work deals not only with the well-organized right extremism in modern Europe as well as with its function in proper political parties, but equally includes two additional, broader approaches: the militant branches and subcultures that exist, including some paramilitary phenomena in Eastern Europe; and the broad realm of their political ideas and cultural trends and the influence they exert on European political culture.
Sufism is known as the mystical dimension of Islam. Breathing Hearts explores this definition to find out what it means to ‘breathe well’ along the Sufi path in the context of anti-Muslim racism. It is the first book-length ethnographic account of Sufi practices and politics in Berlin and describes how Sufi practices are mobilized in healing secular and religious suffering. It tracks the Desire Lines of multi-ethnic immigrants of color, and white German interlocutors to show how Sufi practices complicate the post secular imagination of healing in Germany.
In mid-July 2011, the "lone wolf terrorist" Anders Behring Breivik placed a bomb at the Norwegian government block, killing eight people. He then traveled to a youth camp on a small island in the Oslo archipelago, where another 69 people, mainly teenage social democratic activists, were shot in cold blood. Far right terrorism aligns its actions against the backdrop of ideological evolution and transnational networks that spread their messages in concerted ways. In the Tracks of Breivik addresses the far right by providing both cross-national and country-specific perspectives of transnational networks and dimensions. Law in West German Democracy relates the history of the Federal Republic of Germany as seen through a series of significant trials conducted between 1947 and 2017, explaining how these trials came to take place, the legal issues which they raised, and their importance to the development of democracy in a country slowly emerging from a murderous and criminal régime. It thus illustrates the central issues of the new republic. If, as a Minister for Justice once remarked, crime can be seen as ‘the reverse image of any political system, the shadow cast by the social and economic structures of the day’, it is natural to use court cases to illuminate the eventful history of the Federal Republic’s first seventy years.
In many cases, the Free State of Saxony is seen as a stronghold of right-wing extremism and right-wing populism with prominent results of far-right parties, distinct xenophobic violent scenes and brisk right street protest. By drawing interregional comparisons with western as well as eastern countries, the authors of this volume test the "stronghold Saxony"-thesis on all levels (attitudes, voting behaviour, protest cultures, militant scenes, discourses, ideologies). Thereby, they are looking for potential causes of possible saxon particularities. This volume creates thus a multifaceted picture of right-wing extremism and right-wing populism in Saxony.
