The Understanding, Prevention and Control of Human Cancer is an account of how a married couple opened understanding of environmental carcinogenesis. Elizabeth Cavert and James A. Miller showed that enzymes of the human body activate and enable otherwise benign organic chemicals to combine with DNA in such a manner that cancer results. Their work is of particular note because cancer causes more loss of life-years than the sum of all other causes of death—and, as the President’s (USA) Cancer Panel warned, environmental carcinogenesis is a form of cancer that has been previously “grossly underestimated”. The Millers’ cancer research led to tests that identify dangerous chemicals which in turn permits prevention and thus the control of human cancer.

Vitamania

Vitamania tells how and why vitamins have become so important to so many Americans. Rima Apple examines the claims and counterclaims of scientists, manufacturers, retailers, politicians, and consumers from the discovery of vitamins in the early twentieth century to the present. She reveals the complicated interests--scientific, professional, financial--that have propelled the vitamin industry and its would-be regulators. From early advertisements linking motherhood and vitamin D, to Linus Pauling's claims for vitamin C, to recent congressional debates about restricting vitamin products, Apple's insightful history shows the ambivalence of Americans toward the authority of science. She also documents how consumers have insisted on their right to make their own decisions about their health and their vitamins.

Deadly Dairy Deception

Prostate cancer and breast cancer incidence have reached epidemic proportions with younger age at development becoming commonplace. In fact, it seems many people believe developing one of these cancers is unavoidable. It does not have to be that way! In this thought-provoking work, Dr. Robert Bibb introduces readers everywhere to the killer disguised as a saint: dairy products. Americans consistently hear about the benefits of dairy consumption, such as getting calcium and vitamin D. But rarely are Americans presented with Bibb's insight into the scientific downfalls of consuming dairy products. Bibb goes into detail sharing his information on genes and hormones that affect the cells that produce cancer. He provides thorough research and several statistics linking the milk you put on your cereal or the cheese you eat with crackers to cancer. He even proves that a dairy-free diet can serve as a preventative or perhaps curative method for prostate and breast cancer. Don't become a statistic. Learn about the Deadly Dairy Deception and begin changing your health today!

Responsible Conduct of Research

Recent scandals and controversies, such as data fabrication in federally funded science, data manipulation and distortion in private industry, and human embryonic stem cell research, illustrate the importance of ethics in science. Responsible Conduct of Research, now in a completely updated second edition, provides an introduction to the social, ethical, and legal issues facing scientists today.
