Henry Ustick Onderdonk Papers
Largely Onderdonk's correspondence with Maryland Bishops James Kemp, William Murray Stone, and William Rollinson Whittingham. Subjects include Onderdonk's election as Assistant Bishop of Pennsylvania, opposition thereto, and consecration as bishop, 1827; his writings on episcopacy, reviews, and other articles; episcopal services performed by him in Maryland, 1829; succession to Bishop William White as Bishop of Pennsylvania, 1836; his views concerning the Diocese of Michigan and the election of Bishop McCoskry, 1836; his disapproval of the Reverend James Lloyd Breck's monastic missionary enterprise in the West, 1841; and many clergy matters. Substantial materials concern Onderdonk's trial and suspension, 1844; Bishop Whittingham's call for a special meeting of the House of Bishops to reconsider his case, 1849; the Reverend Charles H. Parkman's "Counter Memorial to the House of Bishops," 1856, concerning remission of his sentence; and Onderdonk's restoration to office shortly before his death. Also later material concerning him.
