Materialisation in Art and Design (MAD)

  • Categories: Art

An examination of program that attempted to help art students (re)establish a relationship with “material” on both a personal and a societal level. Materialisation in Art & Design (MAD), the temporary master's program at the Sandberg Instituut, investigated the conventional hierarchy in art and design education in which concept often takes precedence over material or the making of the work. In an effort to (re)establish a relationship with “material” on both a personal and a societal level, the program placed emphasis on the material expressions of works. This book reflects on the experiences generated through the lens of MAD. With contributions from the program directors, MAD alumni...

"Represent Royal Tichelaar Makkum describes the last fifteen years of the long history of this Frisian earthenware factory and the Netherlands’ oldest company. Under the impassioned leadership of director Jan Tichelaar, Royal Tichelaar Makkum is undergoing a number of decisive changes. By combining century-old craftsmanship with innovative projects by designers and architects, he has succeeded in broadening the company’s activities to include contemporary products in the fields of architecture and design. The production of traditional earthenware, one of Holland’s most famous national products, will continue alongside these new advancements. In this way, new products within both disciplines are being developed while traditional craftsmanship undergoes unique innovations. Represent Royal Tichelaar Makkum outlines the context which gave rise to these developments and gives a picture of the many inspiring products it has generated."--Back cover.

Clip, Stamp, Fold

An explosion of little architectural magazines in the 1960s and 1970s instigated a radical transformation in architectural culture, as the magazines acted as a site of innovation and debate. Clip/Stamp/Fold takes stock of seventy little magazines from this period. The book brings together a remarkable range of documents and original research which the project has produced during its continuous travels over the last four years starting with the exhibition at the Storefront in November 2006. The book features transcripts from the “Small Talks” events in which editors and designers were invited to discuss their magazines; a stocktaking of over 100 significant issues that tracks the changing density and progression of the little magazine phenomenon; transcripts of more than forty interviews with magazine editors and designers from all over the world; a selection of magazine facsimiles; and a fold out poster that offers a mosaic image of more than 1,200 covers examined during the research.
