Waves and Tidal Flat Ecosystems

The authors explain the rewarding results from the interdisciplinary collaboration between an environmental study group working on coastal ecosystems and effects of oil spills and applied mathematicians modelling wave motion on sandy beaches. By using the unified Navier-Stokes equations with a Bingham fluid model for spilled oil, multi-phase flow analysis were made. Decomposition of spilled oil by bacteria was simulated as a chemical reaction, and the theoretical and numerical analysis suggested a countermeasure to help reduce stress on coastal ecosystems. The new understanding of how ecosystems both depend upon, and help to determine, the nature of the shoreline demonstrates promising ways to better assist and exploit the regenerative powers inherent in nature.

This volume contains the texts of selected lectures delivered at the "International Conference on Navier-Stokes Equations: Theory and Numerical Methods," held during 1997 in Varenna, Lecco (Italy). In recent years, the interest in mathematical theory of phenomena in fluid mechanics has increased, particularly from the point of view of numerical analysis. The book surveys recent developments in Navier-Stokes equations and their applications, and contains contributions from leading experts in the field. It will be a valuable resource for all researchers in fluid dynamics.

Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Simulation in Continuum Mechanics

The first international symposium on mathematical foundations of the finite element method was held at the University of Maryland in 1973. During the last three decades there has been great progress in the theory and practice of solving partial differential equations, and research has extended in various directions. Full-scale nonlinear problems have come within the range of nu merical simulation. The importance of mathematical modeling and analysis in science and engineering is steadily increasing. In addition, new possibili ties of analysing the reliability of computations have appeared. Many other developments have occurred: these are only the most noteworthy. This book is the record of t...

Multidisciplinary Methods for Analysis, Optimization and Control of Complex Systems

This book consists of lecture notes of a summer school named after the late Jacques Louis Lions. The summer school was designed to alert both Academia and Industry to the increasing role of multidisciplinary methods and tools for the design of complex products in various areas of socio-economic interest. This volume offers the reader a rare opportunity of being exposed to the presentation of real industrial and societal problems together with the relevant innovative methods used.

The 20th century saw tremendous achievements and progress in science and technology. Undoubtedly, computers and computer-related technologies acted as one of vital catalysts for accelerating this progress in the latter half of the century. The contributions of mathematical sciences have been equally profound, and the synergy between mathematics and computer science has played a key role in accelerating the progress of both fields as well as science and engineering. Mathematical sciences will undoubtedly continue to play this vital role in this new century. In particular, mathematical modeling and numerical simulation will continue to be among the essential methodologies for solving massive a...
